Aus is losing heavy. The reason Ind competes in SENA but they can't is because our pacers can match theirs while their spinners can't.

SOK is out. Swepson doesn't look that good.

And Axar makes this Indian bowling even stronger.

I expect Lyon to do well but the other spinners will be milked.

Well, Australia were supposed to lose heavy in 2017 but then didnt?

Theoretically, with their experience playing in India and against Ashwin, and the Indian batting lineup somewhat out of form, they have a better chance than 2017. Would be really interested to see how well Cummings does. I would consider opening the bowling with him actually.

And if India do lose at home, then that would tip the scales further in favor of Smith's SA team as the better one.

India is year-end number one test team for 6 years now while SA team were number one for 3 years. It will take a lot more than losing one series at home for the scales to tip.

I think we already established though that SA faced stronger opposition than India, so being no.1 in the rankings is not as important a marker. Eng under Strauss for example reached no.1 based on their own hot streak until SA took them down. India under Dhoni were a strong team that reached no.1 based on being unbeaten at home and winning in NZ/WI.

India have only had NZ of late who have emerged as strong competition for no.1 in this time. SA, Eng and Pak who were no.1 before have become mid-tier teams the last 5 years. Aus also reached mid-tier status during Smith's time as captain and since then have lost twice to India at home and won nothing away.

Losing a series at home would mean India are no longer invincible there, which is the thrust behind why their home record is valued so much.

So, all teams that SA faced in 3 years were stronger while all teams faced by India in 6 years were weak. Wow.

You know, teams can be objectively strong by themselves?

Strauss and Dhoni's teams (their competition for no.1) were strong teams regardless of how strong SA were.

Whereas aside from NZ, there haven't been strong sides these last five years to put together a winning streak to rival India for no.1.

Aus have been really inconsistent in their last few years, especially under Steve Smith's captaincy. From 2016 to 2018, they lost in India and SA, were whitewashed in SL and lost a test in Bangladesh, and also lost at home to SA. Their batting especially relied a lot on Smith.

This recent team with Labuschagne and Cummings though seems a bit more settled and but then it proves my point that stronger teams will give India more competition for the no.1 spot.

India beating Australia in 2021 was more of a freak David vs. Goliath victory, since Australia were clearly a better side yet were humbled.

The last time India lost in Australia was in 2014/15 to Clarke's team. Smith never captained against India at home.

Back to the original point:

- You cited India's run as no.1 as indication they were a better team

- I mentioned that this has much to do with less strong rivals for no.1 position for most of their run

- Other poster brought up Australia, I mentioned that of late they have been a better team than they were in 2016-2018 under Smith's captaincy, and have taken up the no.1 spot too, which goes back to my original point that the more strong teams there are around, the less India will occupy no.1
