Mulder has actually been very good with the ball as a fourth seamer since coming into Tests. No indication that he wouldn't be up for the task here.
And it's his home ground.

It harks back to when they tried Philander at seven. That didn't work either and he the benefit of some first-class pedigree with the bat and better batsmen ahead of him.

Yeah India have Ashwin at 7 but he has 5 Test tons right? Some proven results.
I may be wrong but Ashwin the batsman is built upon runs against the West Indies on favourable surfaces. Got out like a number 11 in the first test. These are tough conditions for him.

He's played some great knocks vs end and Aus too tbf.

He'll never score a ton vs SA, but capable of hanging in there for a 40 odd with one of the middle order bats

So SA is fiddling around with its bowling (while dropping the young talented batting allrounder), creating a longer tail, when in actuality the bowling is not really the major concern. While our number 4 and 5 bats have scored a single ton between them. Avg below 35 and are both short term solution to anything because both are 32+ in age. While we have an opening young bat in Rickelton in the form of his life sitting on the sidelines, that would allow SA to move Markram, an obviously talented bat struggling as opener, down to 4 a much better position for him. I don't know if it would work but at least we would be trying to solve the actual team problems and not just doing a conveyor belt replacement in the batting...

Elgar = Rahul
Markram > Aggarwal
Petersen < Pujara
Dussen = Vihari
Bavuma > Rahane
New Keeper < Pant

There's not much in it! Teams are quite EVEN batting-wise.

hopefully rahul uses the fast bowlers better and does not bowl bumrah for 7 over spells. hope bumrah goes all out on pace in 4over bursts

I never will understand playing more than 4 bowlers in test match cricket, particularly when you have a decent allrounder. That just tells me that you can't decide who your best XI is and don't want to make difficult selection decisions.
Modern day workload plays a huge factor in opting for 5 bowlers instead of 4.
