It's anniversary of 36/9 today apparently. Happy 36/9 to all Indian fans.
Rewatching Day 5 of Gabba and SCG tests in honor of 36/9 day. Ashwin shouting out instructions to Vihari in Tamil, yelling "gully pinnala poyirukkaan, ivan velila poduvannu ninaikkaren" (Gully has gone lot finer, he may be bowling an outswinger now). Excellent. :)

Every time I open Cricinfo to see Rishi Dhawan's performance in the previous 5-10 matches, it's always outstanding. Single-handedly wins games for HP. I know he bowls gentle medium pace and is no Pandya with the bat, but it's a little unfair that he doesn't get a look in for tests. He'll get absolutely smoked in T20s coz of his lack of pace, but I really see him doing well in tests in SENA as an all-rounder. If nothing, he can be a backup for Lord Thakur and offer similar performances with the bat and ball.
And again! Already scored 84 and picked up a couple of wickets in the Vijay Hazare Trophy semis, bailed out the team from a tough situation with the bat. The game is still on.

If he has to make it, like 3D Shankar, it has to be as a batsman who can bowl. His bowling will never really be good enough to be an allrounder. #5 is the spot he can aim for but I have seen him bat and I just dont think he has it in him. 3D has better attributes and even he did not really crack international cricket.

Vijay Hazare Finals today - TN Vs HP

After galaxy braining their way by batting their SLA and LS bowlers at 3 and 4, TN finally figured out letting their best batsmen bat long is actually useful in these formats.

It was and HP played brilliantly all tournament. Been chasing and making 300+ consistently. Rishi Dhawan has also been immense. Have to see if he can crack being a #5 batsman at the international level in ODIs. Hopefully there are some A team ODs and T20s overseas for us soon.

Its also the stupidity of playing day games in winter in north India. 9 or 9:30 AM starts (and this was 9 AM) is just perfect for most swing bowlers to create unplayable stuff for batsmen. TN were 40/4 in 15 overs or something. And after 10 AM they got something like 270 in 35 overs. We really should have games in South India at this time of the year or maybe West India. North and East India just make it a bit of a lottery.

And Himachal wins their first Vijay Hazare title. And this comes against a dominant Tamil Nadu unit that has looked unbeatable in the recent past. Rishi Dhawan with key contributions again!

I think he can offer what Shardul does in tests as a 4th seamer who can bat. Like I said earlier, he has found success in all formats in domestic games but as a bowler he relies on gentle seam movement that is just enough to induce edges/miscues. Don't think that style of bowling can work on flat pitches of white ball cricket.

And I don't think Shankar is more skilled than Dhawan. Fielding wise there isn't much to debate, both have done equally well with the bat(although Dhawan has been clearly much better in the last couple of years) and Dhawan is way ahead of Shankar when it comes to bowling despite of both of them bowling at the same pace. In limited overs cricket, Dhawan bowls in the power play and tough overs at the death while Shankar is more of a part time bowler who operates in the middle overs. And for FC games, Dhawan is Himachal's lead pace bowler.

If not the Indian side, at least he needs to be sent on A tours to see what he can do instead of not giving him any opportunities to showcase his skills.

I have actually seen him play in Australia and he looked clueless. 3D actually did well in NZ and has done well in A games in Australia, which is a big difference. He may be bowling in those phases but he is also aided by North Indian winter mornings almost all the time. He is not even able to play IPL regularly unlike 3D and there is a reason for that. His batting is limited, and his bowling is even more limited. Like I said, if he has improved, it has to be as a batsman. I saw him bowl in the game today and it was the same stuff. He gets a bit of movement but is actually a good 5-10K slower than 3D and his go to ball is the Venkie Prasad leg cutter which is easily worked out at the international and even the IPL level.

His numbers have not changed since we've had neutral venues so that's not something we can hold against him(and he is batting on those same wickets so you'll have to credit him somewhere :D ). Also, he has barely got any opportunities, 3 ODIs and a T20. He did well on an A tour to Australia though.

And I did say that white ball cricket at the highest level will be tough to crack for him. His bowling style is quite similar to Lord Shardul, he bowls these unplayable seaming deliveries along with some pretty regular stuff. Lord Shardul has extra pace so he can still be given some time in LO cricket to see if he can fix his economy.

Again, if not the the national team, he should at least get a few opportunities in the A tours and see where it goes from there. He has been consistent year after year and it's always good to have a backup all-rounder in case there is a need. I don't think he'll be able to do much in the IPL even if he gets picked since his bowling will is simply not suited to the format.

Lol, I never doubted his batting ability in India. :) The problem is we need some hitting ability of quality fast bowling for that number and that is where he can be undone. I think we both agree he has earned the right to play some A tours for sure though in LO formats.

In 2021, India won tests in Australia, England and South Africa. Was this the best ever year for Indian test cricket? There were some great wins in early 70s so there may be a challenger year there.

Anyhow what a great transformation of this team. As fans we now start every test with an expectation of win irrespective of where we are playing. Need to nail down NZ in their backyard now.
