The good folks on 5 Live are repeatedly describing England's performance today as 'disappointing'. One can only presume that they have somehow missed the last two tests, , indeed, the last two Ashes series in Australia. 50 ao would have been disappointing. 185 is surely what any sane person would have predicted from this shower. Probably above par in conditions where the opposing captain saw fit to insert them.

A wise man predicted England wouldn't score over 250 in this series (me). I'm a fair chance of being pretty ****ing close (yes I realise it's happened once, marginally)

I think this is the tough bit - even if we do make some of the changes we need to, it'll take a while before it has the chance to start translating into tangible improvements and I'm worried that the powers that be won't have that kind of patience

The funny thing with England is that it seems like in terms of raw talent production is quite strong - they have arguably the best roster of ballstrikers in the world, and their collection of seamers seems reasonably strong. But their red-ball development seems a complete shitshow.

I did see a list today of top 6 batsmen England have debuted in the last 5-6 years. Only a few of them averaged above 30 and, aside from Stokes, it was rarely by much.
