Seems to be no threepeat of T20 titles incoming here for Wellington. They've stuck to their cultural revolution playbook and disregarded the importance of recruiting a South African sacred heart to undergird the whole thing.

Chad Bowes wouldn't have occurred to the (fairly lame) cricket brains at Firebirds HQ as a head in any way worth hunting for this role, but maybe a local nudger born closer to 1980 than 2000 could be better than nothing, as seen with Greg Hay. Probably just needed Papps to be maybe five years younger than he is, as daft as that sounds.

I'm guessing Adi Ashok won't play for aces much in future. He'll move from Auckland. Not sure if it's his idea or the team management's to bowl short, from around the wicket etc but the kid can bowl all right but needs to pitch it up and let it rip. Most leggies bowl to take wickets and here we have Ashok bowling short and trying a variation every ball. At this rate he'll move elsewhere and become a very good bowler.

He probably isn't in their best XI at present, but such is their determination to play him.

Worth remembering too that those Auckland guys are months behind the rest of the associations when it comes to match fitness and general mental state. So if there were dud shots, there's a fair reason why.

Very fair... we can be a bit harsh from our living room isn't it? Expecting the kid to land the ball like Warne and rip it. Warne went for like 200+ in his first outing in test cricket. You're right these guys have not had a game since March. That is a very long time. I was a bit baffled Ashok bowling around the wicket on an outer oval short boundaries defending 94 runs. I can understand if the leg side is bigger and you want to keep the runs under check. Yeah heard Rob O'Donnell talking him up on the mic. I hope the kid goes well. Seeing him in the 19s I know he can bowl and bat. Probably just finding his feet with no cricket behind him this season. Over the next few games he will start to get better that is if Auckland continues to pick him.

Firebirds batting looking quite strong today. Blundell among runs, Rachin seems to have smashed Duffy and others. Now Troy and Bracewell set nicely for the last fifteen. Well set for 320+ score. Otago won the toss and bowled first.

Sears can definitely bat. Not sure why some of them got out slogging though. Troy was so good, I rate him one of the best players of spin going around. Threw away his wicket though, there were still plenty of overs to go.

EDIT: McKenzie bowled well up until then. The first 6 that Newton hit, he telegraphed what he was going for very early, and McKenzie fed it.

Highlight of the match - Newton couldn't have telegraphed he was going that to hit to cow corner any more if he'd mooed it, so McKenzie feeds him right in the slot and is duly hit into the stands/fields. Next ball Newton "Shall we do exactly that again". McKenzie "ok".

Trust me, Auckland rate this guy massively and aren't going to let him go for anything. Wasn't the case with Finn Allen, Ish Sodhi or really anyone else with U19 promise that drifted away to other provinces (Cachopas, Neesham, de Boorder and others I haven't spent the time to think of)

Watched a bit more of the yesterday's highlights and I reckon Firebirds have the most flamboyant white ball batting line up in the country if everyone was available for selection. Come to think of it, Rachin, Finn, Devon, Blundell, Troy, Bracewell, Jimmy and Nathan Smith... that's some batting line up. ND will have the best bowling line up by far. A full side ND vs full side Firebirds in white ball cricket would be a good watch.
