I can understand the impulse to pick really good limited overs players in Tests when the First Class system isn't producing anyone... but picking medicore ones like Billings makes no sense.

"We're going to lose anyway so we might as well make bad selections" is never a good argument.

I don't think Billings is terrible.. He struck a ton in ODI series last year vs Aussies a attack that had Starc Cummins & Hazelwood. Did bat well in series decider as well. If given a proper consistent run he may work.

England's issue is that they need some top order batsman who don't get out cheaply.

All the best top order bats are good slippers. The fact that Harris isn't in there just reinforces the idea that he can't bat.

Tom Latham is one of the best slippers in the world. Bryan Young was pretty good back in the 90s too.
