Pup Clarke
Cricketer Of The Year
C'mon Foakes has got a far higher ceiling in test cricket than Jos Buttler ffs
He's bang average. He's never really under pressure because England always have bigger batting problems, but he's never been particularly good either.Has Butler ever been good in tests? I'm not trying to degrade him just genuinely don't know because every time i watch him play test cricket, he seems to struggle. It doesn't really surprise me either because his technique does not look all that good around the off stump. Great LO player though and maybe that's how he should play. Try be super aggressive like Pant
This has been the oddest thing about butler's test career. That he's been average isnt that surprising, but the manner in which he's actually gone about being average is. He should've been told to turn the intent meter up to 11 years ago. There were signs of it in the first innings last test tbf. He's also remarkably dull to watch in tests. Just nothing interesting about his batting whatsoever. I watch very little LO cricket and sometimes I forget there's another cricketing dimension where he's a box office superstar.
Leaving aside what Uppercut's already said about this, I feel obliged to point out that Boycott never captained England in Australia (apart, maybe, from the occasional tour match). Illingworth's the man you're thinking of. Along with Hutton, the only English captains to reclaim the Ashes in Australia since Bodyline. Root otoh, will probably hold the record for the most ashes tests lost as captain by the end of the series. Not entirely his fault that we're so ****e tbf.
Yeah, playing his home games in England is a problem. It's a proper graveyard for counter-attacking wicket keepers. This has been the oddest thing about butler's test career. Actually you're not wrong, I just misunderstood the point you were making. The Hutton tour that was infamous for some racially insensitive comments was the tour of the WI in the mid-1950s. I think it was the year after they won in Australia. Trueman to the fore, unsurprisingly, but there were others who caused offence too.Yeah I did not know but seem to recall some side Hutton led was remembered but obviously I thought of it for the wrong reason. Lol
Prior managed it, and he was a proper off-side slasher. I think it has a bit to do with the era he played in, flatter pitches and worse bowlers, but I guess Prior was always more confident in his style and gutsy about sticking to it through thick and thin. Buttler has always flitted between his counterattacking instincts and just trying to hold his **** together.Yeah, playing his home games in England is a problem. Maybe at some stage there'll be one or two series where conditions suit him and he properly explodes. Maybe it'll be this one. Australia is the obvious place to do it and it's the first time he's played tests there.
Doesn't free-flowing just mean high strike rate, lots of attacking shots? Like, there's no-one more free-flowing in the shorter forms once he has his eye in.Prior was a free flowing batsman though. I wouldn't describe Butler as free flowing although he I capable of doing real damage with the bat
I think he means that Prior could score at a decent rate without going out of his way to play big shots. He was much better outside off than Buttler is, which made him more suited to the typical test bowling lines.Doesn't free-flowing just mean high strike rate, lots of attacking shots? 48 tests for his maiden test stumping apparently. Dire.Jos Buttler has played more tests than Bradman ffs. You can't keep picking him based on potential. He's a decidedly mediocre batsman and abject keeper. Took him 23 tests to score a test ton and something close to double that (can't recall) to affect his first stumping. Pull the plug.
Did he miss a lot of chances? Did they even have a decent spinner when he played?48 tests for his maiden test stumping apparently. Dire.
