It's difficult to imagine anyone batting better than Lara did in that series - even Bradman in 1930 can't have been much better, you wouldn't think.

That actually raises an interesting discussion point about individual performance vs team result and where different people draw the line. Lara's performance in Sri Lanka there may well have been the greatest batting of my lifetime, but some would always argue that it rates a little below the very top of any "greatest series" list since Sri Lanka swept the series 3-0 anyway, and as such his impact on the overall result was minimal to none.

That’s why I mentioned 4 match series or over.Lara was on another level in Sri Lanka.
Broad,woakes,archer,stokes is a solid attack in England but agree vaas and murali in sl is better.

Ok so, smith 2019 beats lara vs aus at home which beats bradman 1930 which beats viv 1976.Does any of bradmans series beats smith 2019?If not ,smith 2019 might be the best series performance ever.What about Herbie Taylor’s 500 odd runs against SF Barnes in matting wickets?And hammond’s 900 odd runs in 1928-29.Asked a bit much imo.

Smith not having to face Anderson in that series is the only thing that makes me hesitant to rank it above Lara in 99. By every other metric it's right up there.

Actually, the strength of opposition rating is based on the opposition team's rating at the completion of the series (using my own team ratings). I'm thinking of changing it to the ICC ratings of individual bowlers in the attack, but as I said before, bowlers before 1900 typically had very low ratings, which was not representative of their true ability. I want to change it because it would mean Gooch's and Hughes' innings would receive a massive boost.

I have updated the top 100 innings list. This time I used the ICC bowler ratings (current at the end of the match in question) to rate the opposition that each batsman faced. I took each bowler's rating at the end of the match and weighted it against their career peak. I then averaged out the ratings of all bowlers who bowled at least 10% of the team's innings. I believe this is the fairest way.
