Do you care about over rates enough to support penalties?

Do you care about over rates?

Not Terrible
Fines and match bans for egregious violations were alright.
Shouldn't affect the WTC. Anything short of cheating shouldn't.

Over rates are something commentators and other media seem to care about far more than fans ever have, and I suspect fans only do because they're told to.

I don't really know why though, but if I had to guess I'd say sooking about over rates is tied to the commentator having to work half an hour extra when he'd rather be at the local. Over rates have very little impact on the spectator or the viewer.

Bans are much worse than WTC points, clearly. Imagine if Kane got banned from the WTC final due to slow overrate. That would be madness.

Nope, couldn't care less. Also find it strange how it is always the fielding side that's guilty but batsmen can get away with any number of unscheduled breaks, pottering around on the wicket with an eye on the clock, etc.

There is a difference between being a bit slow and completely taking the piss, England, especially on day 2, were well towards the latter.

But generally speaking over rates are not an issue I am especially bothered by

Over rate penalty seems meaningless if Test gets over in 3.5 days
Depends. The ICC doesn't sanction for slow over-rates if the fielding team bowls out the batting team in less than 60 overs (that innings gets omitted from calculations completely). So if it's the case of a lot of wickets falling and as a result a quick game then no one gets penalised. But if one side utterly dominates the other, the losing team might still be found guilty of bowling their overs slowly (as England were).

Agree that 1 point/over is a ridiculous number of points to deduct tho, especially since it's just 4/draw and 12/win. Would make sense if WTC points only applied after a certain threshold as well - like $ fines for being up until X numbers slow, beyond which point penalties apply.

I don't worry about it that much tbh, but you see some ridiculous ****. The othe day, Starc got a wicket first ball of the test and they ran out drinks for the team. Should be docked 100% of your match fee if that's happening, just for being wankers.

Whatever it takes!!!
On this note, the penalties were stricter this year in the IPL and I think you could be docked points from the league table. There was a remarkable improvement in the over rates across all teams. MSD even kept talking about it in most match interviews and could be seen hustling between overs. It maybe a bit extreme but it does make them care a bit more.

On the specific issue of the Gabba test, I agree it seems tad too harsh.

my half baked thought is that it seems a bit silly to expect the same amount of overs on all days of the match when we know that spinners are typically expected to bowl the least over the first part of the match.

that's why the calculation is done as an average across all 5 days and both innings
