Is Ashwin an ATG spinner / player?

Not sure I would say Ashwin/Jadeja are for sure better than Chandra/Bedi purely as bowlers tbh. I think their excellent overseas records get overlooked. Not much between the top 5 Indian spinners: Kumble,Ash, Jaddu, Chandra, Bedi can be put in any order and you can give a reasonable justification.

Seriously, why is he missing? How are the ratings done? Any minimum qualification that disqualifies sir?
People just posted their top 20 spinners in order and I tallied the results. Nobody put Jadeja in a list.

His standing has improved a bit in CW's eyes recently I guess. A few years ago his solid record was perhaps put down to playing exclusively on dustbowls

Bedi is definitely lower imo. Have a theory he got lost in the art of bowling. Didn't use enough strategies and various tricks and skills to really go after wickets. Basically, didn't do enough.

Would have Ashwin over every other Indian spinner till date. He's looked more threatening than Kumble ever did for a while now.

Kumble, Chandra, Gupte up next.

Prasanna, Jadeja, Bedi up next.

mr_mister had the foresight to address this back then:
Your thanks are appreciated mate. Just had a read-back through myself. Man we really got sidetracked while discussing MacGill and then later Murali's action(and George Giffen's action for some reason...)

Some players I thought an argument could have been made for to at least make a top 50 are 'ball-on-a-string'Phil Tufnell, the best English spinner of the 90s, and capable of moments of brilliance such as his 11fer against an ATG filled Australian team in '97. Obviously had a lot of bad days though

Ravi Jadeja, who people will find no amount of excuses to write him off over despite the fact he's taken 200+ test wickets @ 24, and again there are obviously factors to consider here like Indian dustbowls

And last but certainly not least Colin 'Funky' Miller, who went from a middle of the road medium pace bowling journeyman to worthy of breaking into a peak Australian test team around '99 when he starting adding offies to his repertoire. If it could actually be deduced how much of his very impressive test record were wickets bowling off-spin compared to pace(I suspect over 75% were offies since it was a super productive shield season as an offie that got him into the side) I think his standing would be far higher on CW and he could have easily made it onto here.

Might help that he averages better than Ashwin home and away.
Era differences aside, it is a classic case of pacer vs spinner though. Trueman averages 20 at home and 26 away. Ashwin averages 21 at home and 30 away. The difference between them is like Mcgrath and Warne. Everyone who rates Mcgrath as ATG also rates Warne as ATG. But everyone who rates Trueman as ATG doesn't rate Ashwin as an ATG because ....

Whatever it takes!!!
LIke I said earlier, Ash is the greatest matchwinner in the post 70s era. Also the greatest bowler to left handers ever. I mean he averages 21 over 10 years or whatever at home. And is the greatest spinner in SENA in the past 6 years. Yet, people have to bring up nonsensical points coz..........

That series wasnt really an upset to anyone who had being paying attention to Indias bowling attack and Aus batting.

Most statisfying victory, maybe... debatably. But it is well down on greatest Indian victories.
Did you ever feel that the tour to South Africa in 2010 was harder than the previous tour to Australia?

Lots of bowlers average 21 at home. And much better than Ashwin away.

And his competition has been who? Lyon and Jadeja? I love Gary but he’s nowhere near ATG status. And not even gonna comment on Jadeja.

Ashwin's craziest series must be when Saffas toured India in 2015. Him being a spinner sent stumps flying like a Caribbean fast bowler.

We are not considering the 9 MoS in 33 series are we?

And who averages 21 or lesser at home as a spinner over 10 years, please do name.

A bigger matchwinner than Murali?
The figures speak for themselves. Surely you can statsguru your way through Man of the Series awards and Series results?
