Excellent day from England. I've seen a number of promising partnerships fall short, but these two staying solid till stumps is big for them. With 10 overs still to a new ball and these two looking like they could score 300....yeah Australia are in significant trouble.

There was a period of a few years where Hazlewood was actually kind of ineffective by his standards (bowled too short and too straight) and Starc was taking a lot of wickets.
Yeah up until the 2019 Ashes I would've taken Starc in Tests. Since then though Haze has gone to another level and Starc has been even more inconsistent than usual.

They'll probably keep him for the D/N but if Australia blow this Starc should never play Test cricket again unless there's significant injuries.

Hmm, maybe an Indian bias I guess. Every series against India he's looked just bang average.

Yeah his Indian record is pretty dire. Blemishes things even more when you consider that's the only Test series Australia has played in nearly two years (and probably influencing my pessissism somewhat).

Whatever it takes!!!
Good fightback from England over the last two days.

Also, Daily reminder etc etc. Good to see Head, Warner and Labu all get runs. All 3 guys I have always backed for some reason. So dat felt like a good day for me too. Nice to see Malan and Root do well too. Root-Smith definitely emerging as the Sachin-Lara of the fab 4 IMO, and Virat and Kane are at Ponting-Dravid levels.

Really think Starc has to be on his last legs as having a set spot in the side. I actually think Lyon was okay today, not fantastic but did fine on a pitch offering ****-all and it really is only luck that stopped Malan edging him like five times. Hope Haze isn't injured...

There have been so many tests where teams made it to this position in 3rd test to collapse for 350. Australia well ahead just need to strike with the new ball

Yeah I think Lyon was at least somewhat threatening given the circumstances. But it has to be said it's far from the only time where he's looked moderately damaging but unable to deliever anything. I certainly wouldn't have the balls to drop him yet though, especially because the other options could be shitloads worse.

I guess Leach being so easily attacked does give him a bit of a pass though, and if Starc was more reliable/Richardson was playing I think England would've had a harder time milking him.

Strong performance from Street in the A-team match. Might be worth adding if Harris fails again (or at Adelaide).

Worrying thing re starc is how ineffective he looks once the ball loses its shine/stop swinging. You are basically left with two bowlers afterwards. As wayward as Johnson could be, he always had the off cutter going to get people caught at gully when you need a wicket

Haze has done better than Starc at the 2016-2017 home summer against South Africa and Pakistan but yeah Starc was still the main bowler during the time.

Honestly so long as he isn't getting pumped, he's doing more than I would expect from any of the alternatives and he's giving the quicks a break. I wish he didn't get turned around the corner so easily but on that Gabba pitch, going at <3rpo is okay as an offspinner. Starc's ineffectiveness and Hazelwood's absence from that final session are the bigger problems.

Attack should be.

cummins
Michael neser
Jhye Richardson
Swepson.

Haze is struggling with a possible injury hence low overs. Waste of a selection. Starc has successfully bowled himself permanently out of test contention. Lyon is now impotent as a spinner just like last Indian series.

What about neser and jhye. Our two top shield bowlers.

not too sure about Neser for test cricket just yet.
will be gobsmacked if Jhye Richardson isn't in the side soon, particularly for the Perth test.

Been working all night, only saw a very little at end on my phone.

Did Warner field at all and if not does it mean he can't open etc...?

Anyway I've seen enough test cricket to see this script where teams put up a fight in the 3rd dig to get the hopes up until they lose a bunch to the 2nd new ball. Good on England if they can go pass that
