South Africa team selection

Whatever it takes!!!
Isn't there a Malan who can open with Elgar? Then put VDD at 3 and Markram at 4 and you have a very similar 3 and 4 for all formats.

Part of the issue with lower order hitters is how difficult the SA pitches are. Our best performing batsmen are the guys who keep the ball along the ground generally because hitting out just provides problems for the team. Hardly ever get consistent 180+ flat pitches.

Both Malans possibly. Janneman and his older brother Peter was also used for awhile. J. Malan still a bit young and loose though. Petersen has been a consistent top scorer. And ultimately there is a quota issue. If you drop Petersen without a fair number of shots questions will be asked. Bavuma is not going to be dropped.

Is rassie really a lock in for the test team? He's not a bad bat or anything but averages 38 after 10 test's and his fc record doesn't scream that his sealing is much higher, feel like picking a younger guy like janneman who just made an unbeaten double at 4 and has a great fc record would work better.

Janneman's been batting at 4 for Boland in the 4 day competition, which may mean that he's falling out of contention as a test opener.

1.Elgar
2.Makram
3.Peterson?
4.Kyle/van tonder/janneman
5.Temba
6.Quinny
7.Mulder/Poetgeiter
8.Maharaj
9.Rabada
10.ngidi
11.Nortje

Looks pretty good, no? Think it meets quota requirments aswell. Would rather drop temba but he's a token quota player. Is there any better darker skinned batsmen in SA who could replace temba aside from peterson?

He's probably a lock for now. He's been brilliant in the shorter formats and an average of 38 is good enough that they'd be reluctant to drop him in the immediate future. I agree with you about his ceiling, but I don't see the selectors being ruthless enough to drop him, especially with Petersen not having found his feet yet.

Quota requirements are six players, so that's one short. That doesn't necessarily matter as it's actually been a while since they met the quota requirements (which are measured over an entire season rather than on a match by match basis) and it seems to be that if they're meeting the other transformation targets then the national team gets overlooked.

When it comes to batsmen of colour there aren't a whole lot of other options There's Zubayr Hamza, who seems to be back amongst the runs after having gone through a bit of a rough patch following a very brief spell in the test side. He made 94 for Western Province in the match that's currently being player, and another option, Tony de Zorzi, made 129 in that match. Although De Zorzi's probably better in the shorter formats and he's an opening batsman which we already have plenty of.

Would love to see Markram at 3 or 4 in a post-Faf world, particularly given how many of the fringe batsmen have lots of experience opening.

Markram for all of his amazing batting gifts has very hard hands. Which he could get away with if he plays in the middle order. I think 4 is the best spot for him long term because no one else in this SA side can bully bowling the way he does when he is in. I just have the feeling that it's going to be Petersen at 3 and Bavuma at 5 for the India series.

Look I'm never a fan of Bavuma in Tests because he just doesn't score hundreds, but in SA a Test can be won with a match winning 70-80. But this just me justifying his obvious inclusion.

Elgar’s current injury problems is a bit of a concern. But might allow for a few long term options to be given an opportunity.

Sarel Erwee just made 163 against the Titans, so is possibly the front runner to be a replacement opener since he's already been part of the squad.

Mark Boucher hasn't endeared himself to anyone especially with the findings emanating from the hearings. The one thing I do agree with is that the SA team that played in the world cup was not a young one. The Test Side actually has a more youthful look to it when you include regulars players like Ngidi,Mulder,Petersen and Verreynne from the Windies tour who are all in their 20's.

"Young team" and "rebuilding" get thrown out way too often. Granted, we did a string of retirements in fairly quick succession as the last of that team which did so well ended their careers, but the bulk of the side is now made up of well-established players, so surely the rebuilding phase is over?

The rebuilding phase never began...

Is Ngidi really a lock for the test side? His fitness must be a concern. I would want to see him perform in some 4 day games.

There are other options around.

Squad for the series against the Netherlands:

Keshav Maharaj (capt), Daryn Dupavillon, Zubayr Hamza, Reeza Hendricks, Sisanda Magala, Janneman Malan, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo, Wayne Parnell, Ryan Rickelton, Tabraiz Shamsi, Kyle Verreynne, Lizaad Williams, Khaya Zondo.

Good to see Dupavillon and Rickelton then, but Parnell and Zondo?? They may have been in form lately, but yet again we're going with older players who never amounted to that much rather than be forward-looking and pick young players with potential.
