Because of the lack of warm ups and footage in general before the first ball, we're going to have to trust Williamson and Stead to pick the best bowling balance based on what they see. I certainly hope Jamieson is learning the three quarter ball from Southee and Boult.

There is a rumour going around that Henry may replace Wagner. Not too sure on the details but have been hearing about it at cricket today as O'Rourke has been urgently called up for Canterbury and that's the given reason.

That's some development if it's true... Henry in very good form with the ball. Would be a neat addition if Wagner unavailable.

Not convinced that Henry is a good call. Hopefully there's no Wagner injury.

Is picking Jamieson and Wagner any more risky than picking even our most established spinner (Ajaz right now probably)?

I don't think so.

I think even if we picked 5 pace bowlers on the dustiest of dustbowls I think we have bowlers who have proven they can adapt to the conditions - most notably Wagner and Southee. So we should pick our best bowlers. 3 pace, a spinner and an allrounder or two is reasonable.

I think the issue is going to be whether our batsmen can score enough runs.

Wagner being unavailable would change my team composition. Henry definitely the best available replacement in Ferguson's absence, but I would risk a second cold bowler and bring in Somerville and go with 3 spin 2 seam.

Ajaz has proven himself worthy of consideration in the bowling group everywhere tbh. In SENA I think it is almost time for 4 quicks and Ravindra but 3 quicks, seam bowling allrounder and Ajaz would not be the error 3 quicks, seam bowling allrounder and Santner has been in recent seasons.

For now though if Jamieson/Southee/Wagner are available, they play everywhere in the world with Boult the current #4 subject to change if he reasserts his #1 position.

I reckon the kiwi top 5 is better than the Indian top 5 especially since Rahane is pretty much a walking wicket and kohli and pujara are not in great nick.

but India’s bowling looks stronger in these conditions. Bumrah shami ash win jadeja axar v southee jamieson Daryl Mitchell Somerville Ajaz

should be interesting. A two test series benefits nz IMO. If they win a good toss and bat well they should be able to get a win which will ensure minimum series draw and thir batting looks solid to me. Kane Conway and Ross is a quality middle order with Latham impressive at the top. A longer series though and India’s superior attack will probably mean they prevail.
A lot has been said about Nz being India’s bogey team but the Kiwis don’t have a great record in India. This is arguably the best chance they have had to win a series over there.

A draw or win would confirm them as being number 1 test side IMO. If they lose in India it’s a lot more open to debate.

Looking at their FC stats Somerville's probably about the standard of a #9, Patel the standard of a #11.
Ajaz has been playing #8 for CD recently. Reckon it's a bit tough to call him an #11, even if he will be batting at 11.

Both Hamish Rutherford and Greg Hay have been in decent touch in the Shield, but yeah will most likely be Young or Rachin who open.

Should just slot Ravindra in as opener as a direct replacement, but they’ll give it to Young as next batsman in line I suppose. I’d open with Rachin, give Young the no.4 slot and allow Ross to slide down to 5 or 6 though that won’t happen.

Should call a backup keeper into the squad. Cleaver a chance of making it?

Feels harsh on Hay who has never been given a gig but I feel like this would be a step backward.
