Question on ban announcements

Hey, I don't generally like seeing anyone banned these days for long periods of time (despite justifiably calling for a perma for trundler earlier). I'm not sure who wins when someone gets the axe for that period of time. Others disagree, but hey I am allowed an opinion.
This is pretty low. Tone policing the wronged party is disgusting to start with but singling me out to save face is pathetic on top of that.

I have no interest in picking fights as is evidenced by the fact that despite seeing sledger's post as soon soon as it was posted I reported it instead of calling him out. Now this whole ordeal seems to have drawn out both my scorned orbiter and GIMH's tendency to pile on. The former I'll continue to ignore as I always do but I'm in no mood to put up with the latter.

The bit in brackets was tongue in cheek, I don't think you should be perma'd, but I do think your behaviour was poor.

But I will tell you what, you're going to have to justify my tendency to pile on. I'd like you to find any evidence of that from recent years. I've tended to shy away from active confrontation on here for a while now, aside from the usual sparring with old friends/nemeses in the politics threads. I don't think you can remotely justify that comment. Name one recent instance of me joining a CW pile-on. Find the evidence or just cite the example. I don't think you'll be able to, so I think you should withdraw it.

Mate this isn't even the first time you've done it to me. Stop. My behaviour has been pretty ****ing decent for a guy who was at the other end of a racist insult and then had another bloke (Burgey) justify it. And this is without mentioning the bloke who seemingly exists solely to bag me (without ever getting a response). I have no ill-will towards you but I won't be your crutch to save face either.

Right, I gave you some ribbing last year, which was I thought good-natured, hence me VMing you saying 'we are friends now'. You clearly saw that a different way, so I'm sorry about that. But that doesn't equate to a tendency to pile on. You making that accusation is not on.

I have no face to save. sledger is my mate, I didn't defend the post, just felt the contrition was worth taking into account. I don't like to lose anyone from this forum; hell, I wasn't even pleased to see my old nemesis weldone go. The community here means more to me these days. I've got into **** fights over the years, probably more with hb than anyone else and yet we chat often and consider each other friends. In 16 years here I wouldn't pretend I've never joined a pile on but for you to say I have a tendency to pile-on is quite frankly outrageous. This hours after you accused me of defending racism.

I won't get into a sparring match, I'm not going to insult you. But I will defend myself against these remarks. You should withdraw them.

I don't want a shitfight either but the pot shots taken at me repeatedly throughout this thread were uncalled for and

This contention of mine remains unaddressed and you singling me out after apologising to the rest was pretty tasteless also. This is why I said you were piling on. Now, I came into this thread hot and I stand by my initial remarks. You did, however, withdraw your comment about a mob which was one of the two things we butted heads on, the other being you sticking up for sledger. Now onto that: it is easy to see why I was pissed at what I viewed as downplaying the severity of his transgression. I can respect you sticking up for your mate but coming after me like that was certainly not on. I said it was customary of you to defend your mate, not that your were defending racism. And if merely an accusation of defending racism has seemingly ticked you off, look at how I must've felt when I saw people here arguing semantics to take away from race baiting while another bloke justified the initial comments. You did try suggest this sort of thing was commonplace and that you'd spend the rest of your day reporting such posts. Tone policing me from that point on was unseemly too. I've written this post in earnest and I'll withdraw my remarks about you piling on but the way you've dealt with me today, starting off with the toxic comment, given the overriding context today was unacceptable too. Of course I was mad and other SC posters pointed out as much at the time.

Since this has taken bit of a sensitive turn, I will like the forum to understand that racism against brown people is very real. I have experienced it first hand when on my first day ever in UK I called up a car rental guy and the guy went "we don't like you", "oh you know how to use computers" etc because he knew I was from India. Those kind of experiences trigger the kind of emotions Teja and others have alluded to. It cannot pass as banter. We can differentiate between banter and comments with racist undertone.

'I know it's customary for you to defend him after he calls brown people savages'

They were your exact words so you can see what I mean. So the remarks about toxicity etc all stemmed from that for me. But I thank you for withdrawing the pile on remarks.

My stance all along has been not that he didn't do anything wrong, but that he rectified it himself, is genuinely apologetic and that I am not sure anything is gained for anyone by a 3 month ban versus a shorter one. The overriding view in this thread is that the ban length is fair, so it doesn't really matter what I think, but all along I've not said that what he said was okay or that he should not have faced censure. But in a court of law someone who pleads guilty will be dealt a lighter hand; I guess I see the forum equivalent of that being someone who removes the offending post themselves and apologises. I accept my post about reporting posts all day was petulant and stupid, and there are obvious enormous cultural differences that make things land in different ways to different people.

Fusion was the driving force tbh. He threatened to resign and we couldn't have that so we all just wilted to the pressure. He initially wanted a year ban so I had to sit him down for some tea and pakoray and calm him down.
Quite right too, he mustn’t ever be allowed to resign. He must be FIRED

Wow. Did you at least report the guy to management? That's pretty blatant and I'm sure most managers would take some action if things like this are reported.

Didn't know what options I had and didn't have time to find out. It spoiled my day though.

How long ago was this ankitj?

You lodge a formal complaint with any company where you have that sort of experience and I can almost guarantee you it'd be dealt with very strongly.

I know no one asked my opinion but I'll give it anyway even if it adds nothing new. It really was a terrible post and my response in the thread was less joking and more 'wtf'. Like, who was it even trolling? Noumenon or whatever isn't even Pakistani, so was it meant to piss off trundler or me and.. I don't even know who else is left from Pak fan perspective but I guess Fusion? It was really tone deaf in a thread where everyone was already bagging on Pakistani fans based on reactions from PCB, ex-players, and ****ing PakPassion. Kick me while I'm down yeah? I know he went back and made the edit, but it was many hours later, everyone had already seen it and reported it, and I had gone back to it multiple times wondering wtf he was thinking.

I will echo what some of the others have said. The verbiage used by sledger here and in the past is very much representative of some of the racial abuse I've certainly put up with in my time here in the states. That uppity nose-in-the-air attitude while talking about my motherland certainly reminds me of all the times I told someone where I'm from and be greeted by "well at least you're honest" (yeah its funny but feels like ****). But I want to be clear in saying that not once did I think sledger is racist or had that intention. Just like Uppercut said in a post earlier, I always assumed he just didn't realize the impact words like that have. My biggest regret up to now is not reaching out to sledger directly and having a chat with him, which is precisely what I meant to do after he made that "corrupt culture" post but unfortunately life got in the way and I forgot all about it.

In any case, I really don't see anyone wanting to go back on the ban, and the whole situation sucks because it feels odd having him banned on not telling us how things are going with sledger jnr.

Also, cut trundloo a break you ****s. He is an athiest kid in Pakistan in a town that just moved past tanga buggies  . This whole thing is way more personal for him than all of you.

This is literally impossible, those things block the whole road and never give way to anyone.

So, much like the kid who is suspended before the school prom for writing swear words all over the school buildings, does this mean Sledger isn't allowed to take part in any of the CW 20th birthday celebrations?
