Whatever it takes!!!
Like most people I am kinda baffled but the one thing we all know for certain is that both boards do not care at all about the series scoreline.

That take can **** off.
It looks like the logical decision was reached at the end. I mean, in any discussion/meeting a lot of outlandish takes and responses are gonna be thrown around. Its silly that we have social media around now where every such detail is immediately broadcasted to the world and it sets off silly debates. The final conclusion does seem the most pragmatic and logical.

Personally, I would have preferred them to do tests for another 3 days running, including today, and start the test on Monday/Tuesday and pushed IPL back by a week. Its something the BCCI could have done but they didn't want to do.

ECB set a precedent by just walking out of the RSA tour so they would not have gotten anywhere had this been taken to the ICC tribunal. So all in all, I think everyone got the best they could possibly have gotten out of this situation.

Reminder that there is still a lot to learn with respect to protocols for cricket even if its in a country that is basically open. No protocols were broken and it was just an unfortunate situation that came to pass but it shows the need to probably still have internal protocols to ensure series goes as planned. If the shadow of the IPL had not loomed large on this one, we would have simply postponed the test to coming Thursday and played the series out. :(

I mean in an ideal world isn't that exactly what they shouldn't be concerned about? Yes, they are money grabbing ****s for the large part in this world, but still

I do think the players concern is completely justified here though. The physio would have basically interacted with every player.

It's absolutely wild that they never thought this possibility through in advance. I just assumed they'd carry on playing like any other sport would. The multi-day format complicates matters a lot, especially with no substitutions.

Covid subs are allowed but right now I guess the risk is that there may not be enough to form a team if there are positive cases within the team. In SL, when Krunal got it, 8 players had to be removed as "close contacts". We just about had 11 players to play the two games but we had **** like Bhuvi batting at 6.

I don’t actually understand this. What exactly was the reason for the cancellation?

didn’t the players test negative?

Not sure anyone actually knows. The ECB chief has said something about having to consider the mental well-being of the players (which I agree with obv). Don’t know any more than that.

Short answer - BCCI rules cricket and ECB doesn’t have the balls to do a thing other than pretending to wave their dick around a bit.

Get used to it.

Why did ECB fail to insist on a fully biosecure bubble given the sustained covid situation in UK? Why was drunken fans invading the pitch laughed off instead of raising concerns about transmission?

The more you examine the events the less sympathy I have for the incompetent ECB. Did they expect BCCI to field a team at the end of a long tour without any support staff and an overarching fear or more positive cases emerging? With WTC points at stake. Delusional.

Ah. Vaccinated close contacts don't need to self-isolate in the UK any more though.

The India players signed a letter at midnight on Thursday telling their board they would not be playing the fifth Test at Old Trafford due to fears over covid, Telegraph Sport understands.

After a day of frantic calls and meetings between the players, the BCCI and the ECB, the match was cancelled at the 11th hour on Friday with thousands of fans already in Manchester and heading to the ground.

Senior India players met last night and despite reassurances from the ECB about the covid protocols, decided to stand together with many fearing a further spread of covid could prevent them from playing in the IPL which restarts in the UAE on Sept 19.

There are now high-level talks between the ECB and BCCI over whether the match was forfeited by India.

The row over forfeiture or cancellation has huge ramifications for the ECB. If the match was forfeited by India then the ECB are covered by insurance for losses of around £40m, in the same way they would be if the game was forfeited for the death of a monarch or a terrorist attack.

But if the match was cancelled by Covid, the ECB are not covered by insurance leaving them with a huge whole in their finances, a year after losing £16m.

The ECB are furious that India’s head coach, Ravi Shastri, attended a book launch in London last week along with 150 members of the public. He was the first member of the India party to test positive. The book launch had not been cleared by the ECB’s covid compliance department.

The BCCI are refusing at this stage to forfeit the match and accept liability. It would mean the series is a 2-2 draw.

The matter could end up being resolved by the International Cricket Council’s dispute resolution committee.
