Most selfish act in international cricket history by an individual player

Dhoni in the 2019 WC
I was going to mention Dhoni in ODIs for the last few years of his career, genuine match loser. But I'm not sure that was selfish or he just really didn't realise what he was doing for some reason.

Fun fact, Vermeulen was selected and played for Zimbabwe even after he burned down their academy lol

I am also not sure selfish is the word I would use, to me Vermeulen is more just an absolute headcase than anything else. Heard theories that getting sconed by Irfan Pathan in that ODI tri-series way back, but from all I have read he already seemed to be a bit screwy before that. Sad case there.

he never played a match again
Putting the rest of the discussion aside for now, I still 100% maintain that in of itself is indicative of absolutely nothing. He knew full well he would fall straight into a comfortably paid media career post playing

Geoff Boycott. I think the bowler concerned was Johnny Gleeson. Boycott's batting partner came down the wicket and said, "I think I know how to pick him." Bycott allegedly replied, "I worked him out half an hour ago, but don't tell the others in the shed how to pick him."

I don't know if this is selfish, but Pat Symcox attempting to bowl wides to cut off Nathan Astle from scoring an ODI hundred was putrid. I remember it happening recently as well, although it appeared to me to be poorly executed rather than purposeful. Who was that?

Incidentally, John Wright tried to bring in an edict when he was NZ coach around the devaluing of milestones - ie 100s etc. It was pretty naive at best. In a team sport where individual performances still reign supreme, there's always going to be selfish motivation to hold your spot, pad stats etc

I think Pollard was involved?

Can't find it...I looked at Pollard wide but it brings up a massive one Wahab bowled in this year's CPL and one two years ago, not related to what I'm talking about.

Wasn't Rossco stranded on 49 by a wide in some JAMT20 at the cake tin?
I don't remember that, either. My memory for old matches is atrocious. Or actually, it's probably very good for Tests that have meaning, but bugger all for anything else.

Not sure about a T20 at the Cake Tin, but this happened in an ODI at Cobham: https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...vs-west-indies-1st-odi-1115795/full-scorecard

Powell to Taylor, 1 wide
A wide ball and fantasy cricket players all over the world are going "noooo". Not New Zealand. Length ball fired down leg side gives them the win
I was at that game, and there was a pretty loud groan from the crowd.

Few things look as bad as two batsmen racing to get in at the same end. Nayan Mongia and Inzamam have a few of these to their credit.
I remember two West Indian batsmen doing this in an ODI (?) v NZ, and it was pretty much neck and neck. Another one I can't remember where and who it was
