Haven't you got that bloke who looks like he's a 70 year old Sonny Liston but who's really like 23 or something? He played a test out here and looked awful, but is he on the tour at all? Time before last out here he trod on a boundary rope and pulled a heart muscle or something.
Yeah that's Shaw. He was terrible in Aus but seems to have gotten a lot of his hand eye coordination back since then. Would be a walking wicket at 3 though

That's him. But he's a top order player. I mean, if he's good enough to be picked in the squad for that role, he has to be a better bet than throwing in a slogging bowling all rounder at three against a swinging ball. it'd be carnage.

That's Tendulkar I think.

Yeah, you don't understand Jadeja's batting basically. He's not a slogger. He's uncomfortable hitting out right off the bat and does that only when really requied/running out of partners.

Shaw's a top order bat for non-swinging conditions (and when not in terrible shape like the Oz tour)

He bats eight and nine and has all his career. If those scores were regarded as worthy of anything he'd have been batting higher than where he has been since he made them.

In 2012....

Averages more than Rahane in the last X years despite batting with the tail.

Vihari is a very limited player with a ceiling of ~25 in these conditions. Basically like our 3-5 in current form with much less chance of an upside freak innings. I would back him to do better than any of the 3-5 at home right now but definitely not in England.

He has received several chances away from home from the last year or so and has mostly emberassed himself against top quality pace bowling. He also could hardly string together a handful of runs in county cricket recently. I just don’t see how he’ll start doing better than that in a test series.

If we have to get a batsman in the lower middle order, I would rather just take a punt on Shaw. Obviously there are technical issues, but he is in the form of his life and desperate to prove himself. We want him to play a huge role for India in the next decade or so and we can’t shield him from challenging conditions forever. Hopefully batting at 5/6 will give him time in the middle away from the new ball.

Whatever it takes!!!
:)

I think the best thing about him is he seems to be invisible.. That is how the players like it, I guess. He doesn't go running around in the media telling what he thinks of player X or player Y... I think the Indian players seem to prefer a coach who will be like a friend, helping them out in the background and even if he has problems with them, he will only tell that in private.. That kind of an approach seems to be a hit with our players.. First John Wright and now Gary Kirsten.

Also, it seems only left handed openers who seemed to achieve more than their talent indicated make the best coaches for India...
Well, given how well I seem to call these things, its time to get Simon Katich to replace Bewda post WT20.
