Oh I agree, Australia are fundamentally better in every department. But England do have the propensity for 'turning it on' when they are underdogs on occasions - they could just catch Australia could. The SA series in 19/20 is a different proposition to the Ashes sure, but they absolutely dominated that series from the 2nd test onwards
At home they're like this, capable of regularly winning games in a single session despite seeming to be in a constant state of crisis. It's a big part of their charm. I wasn't always so favourably disposed towards the England cricket team.

They've not been touring well for a long time. At best you could call them dangerous opponents, but over five tests you should really beat them without too much trouble.

Got to be honest I'm lost. What events were surrounding that series? Pretty sure that was a full-strength SA team or was there some off-field drama previously? Remember England getting hammered by NZ 2-0 just prior to that series but otherwise my memory is rather blurry
I just realised you meant 19/20, not 18/19. Totally mixed up the years

Whatever it takes!!!
Should be stripped from captaincy duties (at the very least) if he doesn't pick Ashwin at Oval tbf.
I mean, jingoistic Kohli-hate aside, I think it is actually a fair thought process and something I have had since the WTC final. I think the captaincy is getting to him and is also getting to his team mates. His high energy high octane style is not for everyone. He is the reason we have this pace battery today and he is also someone who has backed Rohit forever, so there is much to be thankful for his captaincy but as Dravid once said, every captain has a shelf life and I think Virat has hit his now. I feel his batting will get better when he is not bogged down by the captaincy too.

Yeah that is doable surely, maybe after a loss in SA. It's not his inheritance ffs. Make Rohit captain, Ashwin VC. This is assuming and hoping that Rahane is out of the picture by then.

They’ve consistently done well in SA. Draws in 2009-10 and 2015-16 against good Saf sides and a win last time out against a mediocre one.

India, Australia and NZ are the sides that belt England on tour.

Don't think Kohli has done a lot wrong captaincy-wise tbh. The decision to field a four-pronged pace attack was completely vindicated at Lord's. I would have said Headingley is even worse for spin, so it wouldn't have made a lot of sense to change it now with all four having bowled so well.

Maybe he should have bowled after winning the toss, but I'm not all that convinced. It would be more consistent with the all-pace attack. But the record of teams batting first in England is so good lately that that should generally be the default. There was a little bit of cloud around, but not a lot, and a clear forecast for the rest of the day. It's a meh decision at worst.

Ashwin will come in for the Oval. Looking forward to it.

Yeah, it's a fair call. Without looking our wins in the Caribbean in 03/04 and Pakistan in 00/01 are our only wins in either country since the early 70s and early 60s respectively.
If I may be pedantic, that win in the Caribbean was in the 60s too. We drew there in 1974. And I have long argued that the 2004 win is seriously underrated

In the post day interview even Anderson said he would've batted first, and Root said he wasn't sure what he'd have done at the toss, so yeah. If anything it's just added to Kohli's bizarre toss curse in that the one he won was a toss that didn't really matter.
