*Official* Second Test at Lord's - Aug 12-16 2021

Whatever it takes!!!
I think back in 2002 or so, when India were in England, Geoffrey Boycott used to say on commentary that he felt any international batting line up could accomodate two batsmen who were very positive and quick scoring, but he felt the other 4 needed to be able to play a more "take the runs that are offered" type game and stay put till the situation dictated aggression.

Feel the tables have now turned on that thought given the fact that most batsmen seem to give LO cricket a fair go and techniques become more and more run scoring centric. I think we can always accommodate maybe 2-3 batsmen who are defensive in outlook and will stay put without really struggling out there and can also milk singles when they can. Virat seems to be more worried about his control percentage than his actual runs right now. I feel like Rohit will have a lesser control percentage than Virat since 2020 but look at how much more Rohit contributes. Either Virat has to go back to figuring out how he can score runs again or else we try Virat and Jaddu at 3 and 5 being the defensive batting glue around our more positive batsmen like Rohit, Rahul, Pant, Shaw/Gill, Hardik etc.

Virat is just a captain of hyperboles too. You would think he would have learned his lessons after he announced Rayudu is our #4 in ODIs and then he did not get picked for the WC. He did it in the WTC final as well, announcing a XI that ostensibly takes the pitch out of the equation to the latest "Template" comments before the start of this test. Dude seems to think he has figured out the game of cricket every time he takes a decision. :;laugh:

Interesting analysis. I was thinking that being only 6'0 - short for a fast bowler - is a pretty significant disadvantage for him. IMO being a pace merchant hitting the deck hard isn't that effective unless you're tall enough to get steep bounce to test the edge.

And I don't think being able to get skid as an alternative is worth much. Bounce is a far more potent weapon. And actually, while I'm on the topic, from the admittedly small exposure I've had I think Saqib Mahmood is going to make a very, very average international bowler. He seems to do nothing with it off the seam, isn't particularly tall and for a "fast bowler", isn't actually that fast.

Disclaimer: I just really hate "hit the deck hard" type bowlers, so there's a very good chance I'll continue to say the same things even if Mahmood gets 300 wickets.
Archer is an exception but in general the pace and bounce combination is the least potent in England imo. An accurate 125 kph bowler who nibbles it around is more dangerous than someone whose main weapon is having wheels.

hopefully kohli can over bowl ishant and siraj today

maybe bumrah/shami can be more effective in shorter spells

Shami being sent in to bat above him was massively insulting to Ishant. Has always shown way more grit. Shami should never bat above 10 in any lineup.

They're all bowling 5kph slower than yesterday. By day 5 all the movement will be gone and it'll be rolling through to the keeper. Bowling first was right I reckon. You just got unlucky that Rohit and Rahul so skillfully negotiated the 30-40 overs when it was an advantage to bowl.

Sharma's batting is a joy to watch. Every tail ender should have their own absolutely nonsensical technique.

It used to be a real thing back in the day before bowlers got serious about batting. Was always great enetertainment

How many genuine run out chances have England missed already in this series?

I've not been keeping count, but I think it's in the region of one billion.
