*Official* First Test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham - Aug 4-8 - 2021

the swing is great but i seem to remember even mcgrath maxing out at the early 130s towards the end of his career
He pretty much bowled at that pace his whole career, I would have thought? Don't remember the speed gun ever showing much more than that, although as far bowling a heavy ball goes, his was a cannonball

Is there going to be an early start or the dumb england thing of trying to make up overs at the end of the day?

England should be banned. These perverse conditions are making a mockery of test cricket etc.

I really hope India don't simply fold this morning. I hate the constant false hope that 4-1 brought. As a cricket fan - watching Rishabh Pant bat is one of the great joys. And as an Indian fan, I love how he discourages England from bowling full to him. I really think this is the key in such conditions, to make England reluctant to bowl full and therefore reduce their wicket-taking chances. As we saw in England's innings, if you bowl even a little bit too short, you will just constantly beat the bat rather than catch the edge.

I think he occasionally went over 140kph in his early career, but not a regular thing. He bowled a quick bouncer to Trescothick in the 2005 Ashes which clocked at 140kph and was top-edged for four.

I think height really compensates for relative lack of pace also (relative because 130kph is definitely too quick for me!). Jason Holder sometimes bowls around 120kph but batsmen don't look like they got much time against him.

They spent 20 minutes faffing about and then went off when 3 drops fell onto the umpire's hat.

That's cricket.
The bad light is what really annoyed me because it felt so avoidable and detracted from what could have been an amazing 30 minutes of Pant counterattacking against a heavily swinging ball.

If the forecast is correct, it will stop raining in time for the third session, so it comes down to how well Trent Bridge drains.
My phone now thinks we'll get the morning and afternoon but not much after tea. But BBC feels the opposite.

Whatever it takes!!!
McGrath was quickish even in 1999, his top speed was measured at 87 mph which is close to 140 I guess.

And Manee, will we have any play today? :)

Yeah, I was looking at the BBC forecast. Mind you, the accuweather forecast is different again. iirc the BBC forecast was correct yesterday.

Well, they're playing, and the big news is that Jimmy has actually finished that over.

What do we make of Robinson starting the session ahead of Broad? A reflection on how they've bowled, or splitting the experienced guys?

Pant + Jadeja partnership (assuming the two actually bat together) probably the key here. Outside of England I'd say India are well ahead, as it is I think it's going to be tight.

Plus Rahul of course. You'd think the next two partnerships are crucial, although Pant can always go ballistic whoever is at the other end.
