He should get back to batting - probably still better than half the spuds that turn out for us these days. His cooking looks crap.
This is somehow sad

Great work. These are the kinds of stats that I love. Was looking at the 1978-9 India v WI series and noticed that Gavaskar scored nearly all his 732 runs in the odd (1st, 3rd & 5th) Tests (even though India scored 644-7 in the 6th Test). It turns out that he has the record for the difference between "odd runs" and "even runs", even if 3- and 5-match series are included:
Richards' 725 is the record total from the odd Tests, followed by Bradman (705 in 1930) and Gavaskar. Clarke's 576 is the record total from the even Tests.Code:..............odd.even.diff........... ..SM.Gavaskar.687...45..642.IN-WI.1978 .IVA.Richards.725..104..621.WI-EN.1976 ....E.Paynter.597...56..541.EN-SA.1938 ....MJ.Clarke..50..576..526.AU-IN.2011 .....GA.Gooch.629..123..506.EN-IN.1990 ....RG.Sharma.515...14..501.IN-SA.2019 .....SM.Nurse.521...37..484.WI-NZ.1968 ..PA.de.Silva.486....7..479.SL-NZ.1991 Javed.Miandad.479...25..454.PK-NZ.1976 ......BC.Lara.569..119..450.WI-SL.2001
He threw his lot in with the Netherlands. Also had a decent county stint iirc.I always wonder what SA did with Roelof van der Merwe - solid left arm spinner who could also hit a few big ones, very competitive and a good fielder. He had so much potential, and he had everything that SA needed, should have invested in him and given him a longer rope. Even in test, he wouldn't have been worse than some of the other options that they tried.
His move to NL happened much later right? He threw his lot in with the Netherlands. Also had a decent county stint iirc.
Yes he would...I always wonder what SA did with Roelof van der Merwe - solid left arm spinner who could also hit a few big ones, very competitive and a good fielder. The Viv Richards disparity is predominantly because he didn’t play in the Second Test. Was looking at the 1978-9 India v WI series and noticed that Gavaskar scored nearly all his 732 runs in the odd (1st, 3rd & 5th) Tests (even though India scored 644-7 in the 6th Test). No one has ever said they don't matter. They're just not as important as top order wickets, on balance.Tailender wickets matter. It's common to see a side 80/6 and then you have someone like Sam Curran or Chris Woakes taking the team to 270 all out.
How? They had Paul Harris as their lead spinner for a while, don't think they had too many options that would have done better than van der Merwe.Yes he would...
Not convinced the Dutch team are getting stuff from v/d Merwe that Seelaar isn't already providing, let alone what SA needsHow? They had Paul Harris as their lead spinner for a while, don't think they had too many options that would have done better than van der Merwe.
