Was looking at the 1978-9 India v WI series and noticed that Gavaskar scored nearly all his 732 runs in the odd (1st, 3rd & 5th) Tests (even though India scored 644-7 in the 6th Test). It turns out that he has the record for the difference between "odd runs" and "even runs", even if 3- and 5-match series are included:

I always wonder what SA did with Roelof van der Merwe - solid left arm spinner who could also hit a few big ones, very competitive and a good fielder. He had so much potential, and he had everything that SA needed, should have invested in him and given him a longer rope. Even in test, he wouldn't have been worse than some of the other options that they tried.

He threw his lot in with the Netherlands. Also had a decent county stint iirc.

The Viv Richards disparity is predominantly because he didn’t play in the Second Test.

No one has ever said they don't matter. They're just not as important as top order wickets, on balance.
