Michael Clarke dropping some truth bombs on the radio this morning when asked about Starc's form. Said it was a concern, but before looking at him, ask a few questions about the blokes who opted out of the tour after playing IPL rather than the bloke who's knocked back multiple massive franchise contracts and also toured this time around despite having big family issues over the past few months.

ironically, it would be good for Starc to play some IPL. (I know he takes it off because it's the only time him and Healy have off together). Starc has an amazing T20 record, but he hasn't actually played a non international T20 since 2015 (!). You back him in because of said record, but I do wonder if only playing T20 on the international stage, in bits and blobs all over the world, may have an impact on his effectiveness (this series would be the first time bowling to some of the WI guns in T20 for example)

If he is having issues at home, that might be one of the reasons he has not been so good so far this series too, right?

Clarke's not exactly a popular figure to comment on Australian cricket in the last few years but despite that -- or maybe even because of it -- I have found that he's way more willing than most to call a spade a spade, even if it rubs a few people the wrong way.

Australia still has world's best test batsman and world's best bowler. Don't see case for doom and gloom.

IPL is an easy money. Why would anyone pass on it? And I am an anti-ipl guy. I couldn’t care less about it or t20 in general but can’t deny it’s an attractive source of income.

Also, as a player you only have few years window where you can make big bucks. Aussie/ English players get paid $1-2 mil which is good but peanuts compared to what top athletes make in other sports.

So alternate source of income such as sponsorship and IPL are essential for players IMO. As long as they don’t skip tests or important tournaments like WC, I wouldn’t judge someone for taking a time off.

No one is saying to pass it up. They're saying it's ****ed up to go to the IPL for a couple of months in the middle of a pandemic then turn around and say you're too tired or too much of a family man to play for your country a month later. And they're right. Play both or play neither. Don't pick and choose ffs.

Also, if you think the blokes from here need IPL money, you're kidding. The blokes we are talking about are multis. Some of the highest paid sportspeople in the country already. Smith owns half of Balmain ffs. Cummins has a rural property and just upgraded to a $9 million joint in Bronte after selling another joint int eh eastern suburbs for about $6 mill. They aren't paupers.

Definitely a factor, but at the same time you can't give endless rope to someone who has been underperforming (in one format at least) for years now purely because he's got the right attitude.

Definitely some truth in this. Smith was brought for around three hundred thousand USD in the recent IPL and his net worth must be much higher

Probably shows his strengths and weaknesses as captain. Probably the smartest tactically since Taylor but the weakest since Hughes in terms of man management.

We knew he blew up over stupid things (ie Harris leaving WA) in an unprofessional way that raised questions over how he would handle international coaching, but I don't think it was known he was that emotional within the team environment, although WA state cricketers would obviously be less likely to leak that information than contracted national players
