Surely overrated/underrated is just a way to make a subjective discussion even more subjective? Depends not only on what you hear but also on what you’ve involuntarily remembered.

Claiming you find a player to be underrated is fine and all but it’s a bit like describing your dreams or your favourite colour.

"Overrated/underrated" yes. "Overrated/underrated on cricket chat " narrows it down a bit.

Jay London

School Boy/Girl Cricketer
Shaun Pollock, Younis Khan and VVS Laxman. For all time XI lists far too little attention given to Ashwin and Jadeja - accept that lots of people don't like selecting current players though.

shane watson was always underrated and not even used properly by his side i think. he did have a couple of gun seasons as a test opener but once that faded i think he should have been put in the traditional allrounder spot at #6 and given freedom to be the big man like cairns, flintoff, stokes etc.

he would have been perfect for australia in the past few years and right now. absolute gun 5th bowler who would take the new rock for a couple of countries and he answers the 'who even bats between smith and paine?' question.

i know australia have green but watson would still cruise into the side.

maxwell would be handy right now if he can still score good runs. he and green balance the team nicely.

State Captain
Kapil Dev. He continued playing way past his prime coz the team didn't have any solid replacement(and also because he wanted to go on), Kapil's numbers got really messed up towards the end of his career. He should have stopped way earlier.

I believe all four all-rounders of the 80s were more or less on the same level and each of them had their own area where they were better than others. Numbers don't tell the impact that Kapil had.

I am told that Makhaya Ntinis took more testt wickets than any other paceman in the 2000s. May have misheard it though. He doesn't get much love here though.
Just checked statsguru and it is not even close:
Top 5
Ntini 380 wickets in 97 tests
Brett Lee 303 wickets in 75
McGrath 297 in 66
Pollock 260 in 70
Hoggard 248 in 67

Overall he's only 2nd to Murali amongst all bowlers in the 2000s:

Murali 565 wickets in 84 tests!
Ntini 380 in 97
Warne 357 in 65
Kumble 355 in 74
Harbhajan 322 in 72

Allan Border averaged 53 in the Wi?? That's seriously impressive!!
Averaged 34 against them at home in twice the number of games though. His overall average against WI isn't that high (39.5), but considering who he was facing up to it's pretty damn good nonetheless.

Border's just weird. 46 at home and 56 away. It's already pretty rare to have a higher away average, but to have it differ by that much is pretty unusual.

Playing the WI every two years or so in the 80s and kicking off the series in Brisbane and Perth probably didn't help the home average. They toured here 79/80, 81/82, 84/85 and 88/89. Kerry Packer loved them, they were great for TV ratings. But bad for the health of our cricketers lol.

Stephen Fleming

I know that if you look at the hard figures of his record, he did end up seeing a lot of success at 3. But honestly reckon he'd have been much stronger spending his whole career at 5. Another bloke thatd have benefited having a stronger top order. Could've ended up with a mid to late 40s average. Hussey-lite

Edit: Mentioned because NZ swing/grass kills the top order

Mohinder Amarnath was the other one.

Still 1 of the 4 Asian batsman to average 50 outside Asia iirc. ( Sachin, Gavaskar, Dravid, Mohinder)
