Whether he opened or not, Jayasuriya would actually pretty much make any test team in history. He’d be better than the worst batsman in almost any team.

I know it may be strange, but I feel Steve Waugh as a bat maybe slightly underrated. He gets overshadowed a bit by Ponting but I think he has a case to be better as nobody has a better record against high quality pace.

Steve Waugh was great but he batted 5/6 which is usually easier than batting no 3. He also had a lot of not outs and was seen by some as a bit selfish like Chanderpaul.

Yeah, except those old England sides with Hobbs, Hutton, Sutcliffe etc., he will be at least banging the doors for all sides if not a certainty. Gets over Langer and gets over Haynes in the great Aussie and Windies teams. Definitely over Gambhir as well.

Not sure which other team had two strong ATG openers.
No way he was getting over Langer.

Langer went up a notch as an opener. Became a much better player when he started opening.

why the hell Usman wasn’t given the same extended chance is beyond me

Langer was the best Aust batsman in 05 imo

I think Usman was always perceived as a middle order batsman despite opening occasionally. He should definitely be opening now over Harris who is averaging in the mid 20s

I think Gary Kirsten as an opener hasn't been given his dues especially in Odi's, in the mid 90's he was the price wicket, there was a method to his batting which was probably not as charismatic and flamboyant as Jaysuriya or Anwar but he was almost as/or-more prolific and effective as an opener, also a great fielder.
