Wasn’t it the final test of the South Africa vs England series in 1999/2000? I know that Hansie forfeited the third innings to give England a target, which they then achieved.

So apparently the grass has been mowed on the pitch & It’s not green anymore and is looking like a bat first wicket. India shouldn't need to tinker with the XI at the eleventh hour.

so my question is why can't they start early? It's supposed to be dry for the morning. Why do they have provisions to extend the time of play at the end of the day but not the beginning?

11am local start time is pretty late. And then at the end of the day what's the bet that light is a factor?

The start time is 10:30. Any earlier has too much potential to favour the bowlers. That was why up until the 80's Test Cricket used to start at 11:30 in England.

Might be that India will want to bat first so their spinners bowl last and New Zealand will want to bowl first because they want to make the most of the conditions for their seamers.

Tough decision to make at the toss. NZ wouldn’t necessarily mind bowling first given it’s cloudy, but will be wary of chasing against a 3 pace-2 spin attack on a dry pitch; in any case they’re used to batting first and setting the tone in somewhat similar conditions at home. For India I suspect that it’s a Headingley 2002 scenario - bat first, back yourself to see out the first session, put up a huge score to give the attack the platform to work with and expect Ashwin/Jadeja to play the role Kumble/Harbhajan did back then.
