My parents were both pretty racist, super anti-'PC' when I was growing up, I absolutely would have posted that sort of stuff when I was 18. Fortunately for me, I was never that big on stuff like facebook or twitter!

At that age you haven't had the chance to really form your own opinions and see the world for how it really is. Yeah, you're legally an adult, but gee, go talk to an 18 year old and the difference is night and day.
My dad is of similar sort. Born and brought up in Omaru. Retired now and pretty much locks himself in the house watching telly and listening to talk back. Reckons anyone that doesn't look like him is trouble. Can't change his mindset I suppose. Doesn't understand throws a lot of casual racist stuff around. Reckons it's funny. Doesn't get it. Thinks he's secular and not a racist. If he was on Twitter making statements he'll attract lots of unwanted attention. Glad we were never influenced by him and grew up in a city that was vibrant.

I think we can thank Wagner for that. Conway saw a no-account semi-professional trundler using NZ's weak domestic structure as a springboard to international success and thought to himself "Me too!"

somewhere on the internet there's going to be an article from 2014 with a smug south african coach saying conway will never amount to anything.

even if he sinclairs, this is a huge turnaround from a batsman who was pretty useless in franchise cricket and came to nz to be player/coach at a university club with no promises from wellington.

That's interesting. I grew up in a small town in the South Island (very monocultural) and no one really talked about race (perhaps bcos it was 90% pakeha). I've noticed a lot more racism in cities.

nz in general has made incremental improvement racially (not complete improvement, but incremental). i was born into a rural community in the 90s. they were mostly good people, but looking back with an adults perspective there were always racial, gender, ableist etc undercurrents with individuals and across the community.

it's reinforced at a national scale though. i remember my dad driving me to saturday morning sports with radiosport on*, and doug golightly was the main host. noted nzc and jesse ryder fan mark watson was a fluffy little kitten compared to the sour unreasonable childish melodrama of that bloke and what was acceptable to say on his show. 'the warriors need more white blokes' is not a sarcastic meme for no reason. you could say that on national radio in 2002. mitchell mcclenaghan would have a meltdown if he played in flemings generation.

*switching from the constant negativity of radiosport to his punishing old peoples music has probably contributed to saving my old mans life tbh

No doubt upbringing has a role in it, but that can't be a 100% excuse ... my Dad was born and bred in Waimate and is over 70 now, and I've never heard a racist word out of him ... in fact I think he'd be disgusted by it (my Mum definitely would). He did head off to uni to study engineering though, so I guess he's got a pretty logical mind.

Also have to say I don't think I've ever come across any racism in my club cricket days ... but maybe playing for Naenae and Taita meant it was pretty unlikely. Don't recall anything from opposition sides though, sledging did cross the line in getting too personal from time to time, but not due to race.

I really hope Nicholls can reach 100 tomorrow. He has 6 home centuries and one "neutral 100" (vs Pakistan in the UAE), but a Lords' century would really establish him (and quieten the haters).
He deserves it for the way he batted last night ... back to his best after a dicey few years!

Doug Golightly was bad but I think he's since admitted he was a wrong piece of **** back then and got much more progressive.

Mystery Morrison was the worst of the lot, he would literally do some gay joke about the "Parnell Boys Choir" every week and I guess it was supposed to be hilarious.

Nicholls is so gun. Such an important partnership. Dude just knows how to score runs. Kinda the anti latham.

Sir Ron it is... Yup that's right he was caught in a child abuse case. He's funded lots to cricket Wellington and to clubs.
