They might both start but I definitely wouldn't say it's certain. They might only get one game each to give the fringe bowlers a chance to play and keep Broad and Anderson fresh* with an eye on the India series.

if im england i don't want to risk losing home series to new blood like nz tbh. throw anderson and broad in at lords, get them at the kiwi batting line up early and max your chances of the inevitable anderson/broad once per series meme spell. drop them for the second test and let spuds like wood have a go at a kiwi side lacking confidence so they looks better than they are before the inevitable crash to reality in australia.
i'd be pissed if i was english, my selectors pissed about resting my best bowlers for swinging conditions minnows like india, and my slightly dubious batting line up got jamieson'd or 5outhee'd so hard nz could snick a few through slip to win.
nz haven't played in months and aren't sure what their best side is. ruthlessly nail them to a post ffs.

The top 6 pretty much as we'd expect isn't it? I'm pleasantly surprised that Sibley is fit to play. Stokes is the only absentee. Agreed that we could find ourselves 5 down for not many, but that's always going to be the case with us, especially against a very good NZ attack in these conditions. Foakes' injury is frustrating as hell, and I have no idea how good Bracey is. Bowling is indeed something of a lottery. I tend to agree with whoever posted a while back that we could do worse that pick four quicks and rely on Root's part-time off-spin. I would tend to go with Broad and Anderson at this stage. There should be more opportunity to rotate them once Woakes is back.

I didn’t mean strange as in there being anything specifically wrong with it, just in it being hard to be confident which way it will go.

Interesting we called up two players to replace Foakes. Billings especially is a bit odd given he's more or less given up keeping and was in the IPL. Why not bring Jos in? Had 3 tests off in India.
Kinda smacks of Silverwood having a bob each way on the batting front.

Not totally sure who the Hampshire players are except for Ajeet Dale, I couldn't find the other two.

Yeah, despite the differences in their test batting averages I'd probably bat Bracewell ahead of Jamieson.

Yes Ajeet Dale's bowling for Hampshire 2nd XI is a bit like Rachin's bowling for Wellington. He's clearly shooting for the moon (i.e. 140+ pace) but in the meantime he can often leave the taking of actual wickets to others, chiefly James Fuller (the former Otago and Auckland guy). John Turner bowls the second ball in the vid.

NEW DELHI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) is revisiting the existing playing conditions for the inaugural World Test Championship (WTC) final to be played between India and New Zealand in Southampton from June 18.
TOI has learnt that the finalized playing conditions will be out this week.
There is much confusion about what happens if the match ends in a draw. When the WTC was formulated, the ICC had stated in its FAQs that a reserve day would be kept for the final. Interestingly, the clause has been taken off from the ICC website. And it was also stated that if the match ended in a draw, both teams would be declared joint winners.
As per the initial plans, the reserve day would have kicked in if there were any hours lost in the first five days of the match. "The idea was to ensure that the match is played out in the 30 hours in the first five days. And the reserve day would come into play only if a total of 30 hours were not played in the first five days. That would have meant that the result had a lesser chance of being influenced by weather," an ICC source told TOI. However, TOI understands there is much ambiguity when it comes to just 'hours of play'. The ICC would need to factor in the possible slow over rates too. A five-day match is supposed to have a maximum of 450 overs.
"The idea of having joint winners also doesn't sit very well given it's the first time a WTC final is being played. So, one has to have maximum options open to get a result out of the match. The ICC committee is working on it and it should be out this week," the source added.
WTC fate to be discussed at ICC meeting on June 1
There are also doubts over the fate of WTC and TOI has learnt that the matter will be discussed at the ICC board meeting on June 1. While launching the WTC in 2019 ICC had announced it will continue with the championship in the 2021-23 cycle as well.
The first series in the WTC 2021-23 cycle is supposed to be the five Test matches India are scheduled to play in England a month after the WTC final. However, there's silence on if there will be any changes in points allocation in the series.
However, there are some members who are skeptical about the success of the tournament. Greg Barclay, while assuming his role as ICC chairman in November, had said that the WTC hasn't achieved what it intended to. There have been multiple complaints on the points allocation system and format of the championship besides playing through the pandemic making matters worse.
