Disagree re. Hughes. He was brought into the side at the right time and was already dominating the Shield. He definitely earned his position through performance and wouldn't have gained anything by staying in the Shield for another year or 2.

I am personally not a fan of using Duke balls in domestics if you are gonna play your internationals with a different ball. Presume with your domestic setup and how many of your blokes can play county, it would be a bit of a waste. Playing in the spring and more venues where tracks and conditions can naturally assist bowlers more maybe better.

The problem there was not so much his initial selection, but the way he was mismanaged in the two to three years afterward, especially in regards to the weight of expectation that followed him upon every recall. No single cricketer, no matter how talented, should be thought of as the silver bullet to solve all the teams collective woes
I just think this whole culture of always looking for the next potential superstar has done Australian cricket overwhelmingly more harm than good

Absolutely, pretty pleased with that. Doggett was probably not an absolute lock for the QLD side when everybody is fully fit, yet over here he will probably be taking the new rock. Got good pace, can swing it away, and has shown he can do the job at Shield level before. Rest of the pickups are somewhat of a mixed bag, Carder I am a touch unsold on although he has made runs against South Australia a few times before, McSweeney hasn't done much really at FC level but was arguably picked a bit prematurely, gunned it in brisbane grade last season though. I have been on the record as a McAndrew fan a couple of times although I suspect his batting may be being oversold a touch, young Buckingham on the rookie list I know very little about but he supposedly has some pace about him
I like what they have done in terms of trying to get a more dynamic bowling attack, batting still looks as sketchy as ever though

I guess Larkin may try his luck in Ireland after all, been cut from the NSW list. Solway gone too, looks like they are indeed going all in on the kids.

Sams and Dwarshuis seem to be limited overs specialists (although I do tend to think Dwarsh might go alright with the red ball), MEdwards missed all of last year with stress fractures, Tremain couldn't even get a look in despite moving back home with a fair bit of hype, the four rookies are all fast bowlers/bowling allrounders too. Seems a touch odd

The fact that Solway was axed shows everything wrong with the current system. Kid grinds it up for years in grade to earn his chance and makes a 100 on debut, then gets ****ed around the order and dropped after a few bad games to give fc hacks like JEdwards and once a season knock players like Sangha another chance because "YoUTh PolICY."
I'm all for giving youth a go but MAKE THEM EARN IT.

Yeah my gut feel was too many seamers. NSW do enjoy picking plenty of them in an eleven though.
I've always defended Larkin but I can see why they've moved on from him after yet another season of one gun knock and averaging 30 odd, but Solway's exclusion is a disgrace. I like the look of Hearne as much as the next guy but there's no reason for Davies, Edwards or Hackney to be given contracts ahead of Solway. Davies is fun but surely competing only for the role of slapping dingers at 6 in the one day comp isn't worthy of a contract.

It isn't even like Solway is that old either, at 26 he could hypothetically still have a good seven or eight seasons in him form permitting. Just a seriously muddle headed decision, GChappellism at its worst
I am staggered Larkin and Solway have missed out on selection. For them not to be in the top 20 players excluding CA and rookie contracted players is an absolute joke. I don't think Davies, J Edwards, Gilkes, Hearne and Sangha are consistent enough. NSW have no contracted batsmen between the age of 22 and 27 inclusive which makes the release of Solway in particular all the more baffling. I would have left out Mickey Edwards and Chris Tremain who didn't play last season. Zampa wouldn't get a place either if it wasn't for his CA contract. If the four rookies contracts are fast bowlers what is the point of offering them contracts as they will not get a look in? I don't have a problem with Dwarshuis and Sams being selected as one-day specialists.

But really, your post is all wrong. It's twisting the narrative around. He didn't get dropped for Sangha/Edwards until he played 6 games this season for an average of 24 and NSW got rolled for 32. Hardly a shock he got dropped after that. Teams tend to make changes when they suck all season and get embarrassed. It's something to do with making them earn it. Solway made a ton on debut, and then over the next 12 games averaged 32. He missed some games and got shuffled around the order when Aus players came back to the team, which is perfectly fine. It's hardly a hard luck story. This ain't like when NSW just decided Mad Dog was too hard to handle.
If there's one hack player, one once a season knock player that screwed Solway over, it ain't Sangha, it ain't Edwards, it ain't Gilkes. It's Nick Larkin and just because he's a old **** doesn't mean he can avoid the blame. Larkin should have been cut yonks ago because it was perfectly clear he was barely shield standard despite 2nd XI and Grade runs and we wasted game after game into him. Solway could have possibly made the opening spot his own if it wasn't for Larkin wasting everyone's time. Now, I will absolutely agree that there's an element of Solway being thrown out with the bathwater here because Larkin and Hughes sucked eggs last season and made every single innings for NSW difficult, but Solway sucked too.
NSW has spent most of the past 10 seasons completely ignoring youth, bar one season when Edwards and Sangha got games, and then they got ignored for the next 18 months anyway, but the results aren't actually there for NSW. Larkin averaged under 30. Hughes is slipping to mid 30's with most of his runs from the last two seasons coming from two games. Solway averaged 32 over his last 10 games. And NSW have won two shields in that time, one in 2013-2014 and one in the Covid affected season, which we got early wins when we had Warner and Smith around, and would have probably struggled in a final. We've been saved recently by having Steve Smith and David Warner play a few more games than usual, and Mosies Henriques batting like a God. It's not a surprise NSW are moving in a new direction because the old direction wasn't taking them anywhere anyway.
They've given way too many contracts to OD/T20 folk, and I kinda figured Copeland would get the tap on the shoulder. Not sure what the point of recruiting Tremain was, I figured he was going to be the steady vet replacing Copeland but now there's a 50/50 chance they both disappear next season.

Yeah honestly my initial post may have been an overreaction, if max Bryant had picked up max Bryant they would have won the shield final by 500 runs, not an innings and 809 runs.
