Is this a Rahul problem or an Indian top-order batsman problem. For all the criticism Rahul gets, he's scoring at a quicker SR than Rohit and Kohli this season and scored at a quicker rate than them last season. Dhawan has had this problem in the past too of scoring quite slowly. Is the Indian team management putting more emphasis on runs over SR in white-ball cricket and that influencing the approach of the batsman trying to get themselves into the setup. I mean whilst I think some of the criticism of Rahul is warranted he probably has the biggest excuse of the 3 to play an anchor role - Mumbai have QdK, Rohit, Ishan, Suryakumar, Pollard, Pandyas as their top 7 - what is Rohit anchoring?

Kohli has Paddikal, Maxwell and de Villiers all in decent form this season.

Rahul has Gayle and Agarwal in reasonable form and Pooran in no form. You take Rohit out the MI side for a solid Indian opener you aren't that much worse of a side. You take Kohli out he's missed but probably less so then one would first assume - especially if you get Sundar as a powerplay bowler. You take Rahul out of KXIP and their batting looks a whole lot weaker - so whilst I don't necessarily agree with the approach I kind of get it more so than Rohit and Kohli.

Pretty much without fail when I bag a player in this thread, they go on to do well.

Let's try the opposite. Kohli is as good as he's ever been.

This is a good observation. The English team's approach with the bat in LO cricket is the perfect template for others to mimic. Sure on some occasions you might look silly if wickets fall in a cluster, but coz of the flat wickets and 2 new balls, any total can be chased in the second innings, so it's best to maximise your score and attack instead of playing conservatively. Kohli and Rohit do get a free pass coz they've been able to change gears and win games on more occasions compared to someone like Rahul. But even they've been guilty of taking their own sweet time

Also, Dhawan and Pandey are exactly same, either they score well or get stuck and keep wasting deliveries.

Whatever it takes!!!
I would rather have Virat open with Rohit instead of Rahul or Shikhar. Remember IPL attacks always have a weaker bowler or two to target but you cant get away like that in international cricket against the top 5 sides. If we are playing Shaw though, and if he is in good form, then no issues with Virat at 3 and SKY at 4 and removing one of the bowlers.

I can understand the pragmatism a tad more in ODIs and agree the England model is an ideal one to follow but do think Englans deserve a lot of credit for not just adopting the approach but pulling it off - think a lot of it is ability as well as mindset. Mindset comes from the top and giving players long ropes. England are also helped by batting deep whereas you have had 2 wrist spinners, Bumrah and Shami at times with India which makes batting with such aggression riskier in 50 over cricket.

And agree on Rohit and Kohli getting a free pass, this is just a hunch from what I can recall but I suspect Rahul has won games for KXIP since he joined then Rohit and Kohli before and after this distinct change in approach. But Rahul gets called out and Kohli and Rohit praised a lot more.

Most IPL sides have pretty strong main bowlers especially for Indian conditions but yes sometimes the 5th/6th options can be weak but -
Dhawan seems to be batting with more freedom last year and Rahul if he can bat with freedom - if they can go at a good SR I'd be less worried about the average - Rohit, Kohli will get a lot of runs you would expect but just think they may be able to fully exploit the powerplay more with Kohli at 3 although he is a better T20 batsman for India then for RCB. Although much of Kohlis India success has come at 3 and you can encourage greater freedom from the batters if you've got decent depth in batting and with India having a variety of opening options Kohli at 3 is a decent option I think.

Only issue is if you want Iyer in the XI he is probably best suited to 3 but otherwise think Kohli can manage the tempo of the innings and it seems like he will do it whether encouraged to or not at 3 and allow the powerplay to be exploited more.

Regime change at SRH.
Wouldn't be at all surprised if it turns out down the line that Warner's heart and mind wasn't on cricket and batting at all during this time.

I'd say it'd probably be unsurprising if he went home now, but...

Think that is not the issue here. Looks like there were disagreements based on what Warner said after the game (the one before they played CSK). I wont be surprised if it was the Maran girl interfering in running the team.

I remember watching a couple of clips of the auction and the Maran girl was on the call whole time with whoever was calling shots and Laxman & co were sitting at the table as if they don't have much say on the auction picks.

I wont be surprised if we see big shakeups next year for SRH. Abhishek Sharma and Vijay Shankar as well as Abdul Samad, all 3 deserve better than whatever they are getting at SRH IMO.

Never heard of this maran chick before but googling her has presented me with this. Certainly a touch of villain and evil on that face.
