We've seen so little of Young that it feels outright outrageous for me to think this, but I just don't think he has "it". Domestic journeyman to me.
I think he's shown enough against good attacks to suggest it is there, but there's obviously a gaping hole in his technique in the longer form especially in terms of playing around his front pad and probably shot selection too, given his historical inability to convert starts and that gash shot the other night.

I'm not even sure there's a ready-made spot in any format for a while anyway (barring injury or rest).

I still think Will Young is a high quality batsman. I think if circumstances were different he could easily have a straight swap for being in Henry Nicholls' shoes, I think they are batsmen with a similar level of talent, one has just been able to nurture it better.

Man, how awful was that shot that Henry Nicholls played? Enough to make Tim Southee shake his head. Hard to think of many other batsmen who can look so correct and clever on their good days, and so club-standard on their bad days.

I'd have liked Young to play this one as well. We all know Taylor is a legend and it's easy enough for him with the experience. Young on the other hand is like 28-29 year old. At best he has like 5-6 years of international cricket. Consistent selection will help his cause but if he's going to be in and out he'll lose out on game time. At the least if he's not playing can't be he released to play for CD? There's till two more 4 day games to go in the season.

I think he has it to go well at international but he needs consistent selection.

Chapman will probably be released from the squad as he was in there just for Taylor. But then again, both Chapman and Young are in the T20I squad so will probably just hang around

I think that's a testament to how mentally tough Henry Nicholls is. He's not the most talented batsman in the team, and there's actually probably a handful (if not more) who aren't in the NZ side at the moment who could claim to be as proficient. But he's made in Test cricket by being mentally tough, a good decision maker, all the right qualities to do well. Averaging 43 with seven Test tons (and bloody good ones at that) is pretty damn good. I'm still not at all convinced he has a place in the ODI side, however.

Surely Conway has at least surpassed Young in the test rankings now, in the eyes of Larsen?

It just seems like Young is in a pretty bad/awful run of form atm to me ... I can’t imagine he scored all those runs with the front pad issues he’s shown recently.

I want to see Will Young play. This bores me. By this, I mean the reason I watch white ball games is to see the new guys.

Do ODIs matter, what is this league stuff? Or you gonna make me look it up.

Don't disagree about Conway being ahead of him, but Young's averaging close to 50 in FC cricket this season and 40+ in the Supersmash at a great strike rate. Seems a bit ott to say he's in awful form on the back of literally 2 test innings and one ODI.

Another day another Nicholls drop. I hope the god of crabby lefties keeps watching over him come June.

EDIT: Haha!

Here we go... Nicholls getting his first life of the day. Longer he bats more he'll get more meaning others won't

Have you say Nicholls is one of the most ugliest I've watched. He's super effective though. Gets runs consistently.

Conway making it look very easy out there. Masterclass. That on drive was amazing. I didn't think he can play straight. He's definitely playing straighter of late.
