Jadeja (899)
Kapil (877)
Kumble (859)
Bumrah (835)

This is the attack most folks are picking right now for ATG XI.

Sure but you still need a bit of common sense. You very rarely, if ever, are going to benefit from a 3rd spinner.

True. Historically Indian ATG XIs always tended to have 3 spinners. But now with Bumrah and Shami, you can legitimately pick 3 pacers.

Daily reminder that he’s a ridiculous cricket player. And we have Ashwin. In the same team, at the same time (when one is not injured and when we don’t drop one...)

Yea it's not like we have someone else anyway who will match their output (especially in both disciplines), much less outdo them. We just end up picking Vihari and as much as I like him and he has played some good innings, I'd be tempted to give Jadeja a go instead in his stead. Or maybe Sundar as another all rounder - bring in a team of all rounders.

There's also the "Jadeja pre-X and Jadeja post-X" - typically around 2014/2015/2016...

Jadeja since 2015:
39 tests, split 28 home, 11 away
1,590 runs @ 42.97; 42.65 home; 43.72 away
175 wickets @ 22.76, 4.48 WPM; 21.31 home; 26.95 away

vs his career averages:
51 tests, split 33 home, 18 away
1,954 runs @ 36.18; 38.90 home; 32.52 away
220 wickets @ 24.32; 21.06 home; 32.44 away

Bedi was a highly defensive bowler and a nothing batsman. As other ATG teams (Aus, WI, Eng, SA etc) will be far stronger than ours, it makes sense to beef up the batting a lot without compromising on bowling. Jadeja should be a much better candidate on all fronts as CricAddict said

Then you pick Jadeja and Ashwin - who have proven to do just that multiple times across different surfaces now with the current bowling attack.

Jadeja walks into an India XI - I'm still absolutely bewildered he isn't in some people's...have a look at his numbers again, and then there's the fielding.

IIRC Zaheer Khan had the highest quality of victims amongst Test bowlers with over 200 wickets. Being LH adds variety. And going against the strongest opposition should merit some consideration.
Jadeja perks up the fielding and should be included,
Love to see Ashwin and Kumble operate in tandem to engineer their victims downfall, both being engineers at that.

If Shami and Bhumrah keep going the way they have been and take 250+ wickets, then it makes Indian bowling ridiculously strong. I would bin VVS and take Ashwin-Jadeja-Kapil-Bhumrah-Shami.

Indian all time Xi is shaping up nicely. If above comes true, they can stack up well against other top tier teams.

Farokh might be a worthwhile addition to this engineering fraternity.
