I think they rate his batting ahead of Ash but are still living off the left/right combination from Australia

Yeah that could explain it. I don't want to give them the benefit of the doubt though, I want to rant about someone I don't rate at all being selected ahead of someone I've rated since he was 18.

Yeah I get that but I don't think Ashwin at 7 is acceptable in a Test match anymore, so any decision that prioritised literally anything ahead of "make sure we pick at least seven better batsmen than Ashwin" was just automatically bad.
