*Official* 2nd Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, 13 - 17 Feb 2021

If they think his repeated gumbidied televised efforts with the bat trump his reasonable First Class average then I don't think Ashwin at 7 is a good call, so he should just be in contention with Kuldeep and Nadeem as bowlers.
What is "gumbidied" ?

I googled it and all I got was obituaries of an African actor.

Drunk typist's attempt at "gumbied", which you also probably won't find in the dictionary.

Lets just say he looked more like Boult than Sangakkara when he lined up to bat in international cricket.

Actually, I think I was trying to say "gumbified" -- which is much closer to what I typed.

Looking forward to settling back and watching this tomorrow afternoon and evening while reposing next to the pool at Jonah's.

Even better! More time for the thoroughly-exhausted-from-playing-four-tests-since-August England bowlers to rest up and hopefully put out their best side instead of dropping leading wicket takers.

Don't share your faith in our batting especially with the non-performing number 5. Hoped we wouldn't need Sundar at home too, but I think we're stuck (?) with him for now.
I think a frontline spinner in place of him means we are attacking the opposition batsmen and going for wickets. If we don't have bowlers who can pick wickets, the pressure will always be on the batsmen to score heaps of runs. We don't need to go defensive with our bowlers in spin-friendly conditions. It makes sense to pick someone like Washi in overseas conditions, but at home, there are plenty who can exploit the surface better than him.

washi is a 90-95Kmph off spinner who doesn't turn it

so obviously, the aussies played him like he was the goat

I know you jest, but the Indian side wanted him to stay back as a net bowler precisely because they thought he can give them practice for playing Lyon.

I am not sure Archer would have played in the 2nd Test anyway.

Do they play both Broad and Anderson or bring in Stone or Woakes though?

Must be tempting to go for the former even if it might not have been the original plan. I'd be thinking Broad and Stone and leave Anderson / Broad for the D/N but who knows?

I guess that answers the 'Archer wasn't trying' theorists.

Stone the like for like replacement in Wood's absence but it'd be a huge call to play the guy who's only bowled in a single Test innings before (home to Ireland) and leave Anderson and Woakes on the bench. Feels like an unnecessary risk to take when we've just gone ahead in the series.

I’d just bring Broad in and leave the rest of the bowling attack the same. England need to focus on the second test first and foremost. No point giving the initiative back to India by resting too many key players
