He made a 65 in the PS.
Yep, around late October. Is in a massive rut though, haven't seen anything written about it either.

I don't doubt he has the ability to battle back (although I should, because usually when I do doubt it the player miraculously becomes world class again). There's a few guys snapping at his heels like Seifert, Phillips etc however, even Conway who look like they could do a job in ODIs going forward. Can't **** around too long

Yet another incident. I think there were idiots all along. I've seen my team mates make comments that probably wouldn't fly past these days. There were undertones but not out and out slurs. Then didn't think much but definitely can relate to those. Folks just carried on in the past. Good to see there's lot more awareness and teams stand up against it these days.

How is Guptill an incumbent despite being in an obvious trot, while Munro has been jettisoned, sans actual form slump.

I'm getting bored with myself making this same post so many times, but it bears repeating. Poor old mistreated Colin.
It's a joke. Guptill clearly one of the cool kids and gets a free-pass regardless of whether he's scoring runs or not. Based on his performances in IT20 for the past two years, he shouldn't be anywhere near the team.

munro was a lead weight on nzs odi wc campaign. it was less 'he's ill suited to this role in this format' and a lot more 'couldn't buy a run in any format right now' so he was hucked.

guptill, himself a lead weight during the wc and beyond, should also be dropped. im open to a t20 recall for munro.

Ok, so with qualification for the WTC final now guaranteed, and India almost certain as an opponent, should NZ look to play two different bowling attacks in the England series to keep the bowlers fresh for the final?

yes

the series isn't even for points. play the full strength side in the first test and if we win (big if - england are formidable at home) rotate at least two bowlers out and rest any batsman who looks remotely sore.

ideally though the batsmen get both tests to get used to the duke because i worry for our lot against it. latham goes missing against the better fast bowling attacks, blundell doesn't really get forward, taylor looked nearly done this summer and nicholls has little of note away from home. i wouldn't mind the concussion subs getting a hit though.

if we lose the first test then reassess as we go, but still be mindful of the short turnaround. ideally we'll take a massive covid squad so maybe we could even get the reserves a run against the england lions or a county side during the first test. with covid threatening various series i think both boards would benefit from an NZ A v england lions match on the side.

the south african postponement could quickly become a nightmare if we have a test series here v aus to go with the t20s. i mean there's plenty of time for both.

imagine if the ceo let it count for wtc points. we'd have to assassinate him before he signed our final away.

I was going to reply to Thierry's post but I'll make it this one. I feel like a lot of people, potentially selectors included, misalign ODI Munro with T20 Munro. T20 international Munro never hit a bare patch. They're two vastly different formats. He should still be our T20 opener. I'd wager that how it happened was (and I have no inside on this) Manu wasn't offered an NZC contract because his weighting isn't sufficient (not an ODI or Test option), there was Perth on his manager's table so he took the prudent move for a guy with a family. And NZC frown upon that. If they value the format, they shouldn't. He's our best opener.

Gup is horribly out of form, I'm all for him continuing in 50 overs but the way he's hitting it, the need to score quickly just isn't in him. So yeah I agree, Gup should be dropped - although I might be tempted to give him the first couple of Australian T20s to confirm it.

Yeah NZ played a bunch of T20s in 2019-20 and Munro did well enough for the most part I recall, mostly tended to give his wicket away thoughtlessly (that Kolhi-effected run out in the deep had me rolling my eyes). Still, definitely better value in the format than Guptill currently.

Always been a big fan of gup and I'll say it again, he's the only guy in our LO setup who has hit the likes of bumrah, cummins, starc, steyn and rabada right out of a spell and put pressure back on them. The likes of Kane and Ross see a strike bowler out and pick the lesser bowlers for boundaries. (Not hating, I love their batsmanship) Its those passages of play I've noticed with gup that stick with me and make me a fan of him. More often than not he does not care about reputations and hits away. But this time feels different, it just really does. I think its over....Allen, Seifert, Munro, Phillips...its just too much for gup now.

His absolute peak as an ODI player was the period between the 2015 WC and early 2017 when he hit that 180 against South Africa. Since then it feels like a decline which could be terminal. But to be fair NZ have played very little ODI cricket for about 18 months either side of the 2019 WC (around 18 ODIs in a three year period after England visited in early 2018, leaving aside the world cup), so it's not as if he's had a ton of game time.

None of the names you mentioned as competition are certainties to make an ODI squad if it gets picked tomorrow, so Guptill should still be incumbent. Still, with the focus now seemingly on the T20 world cups I'm pretty sure there isn't a ton of 50-over cricket lined up for the next year, so wonder if he will be able to regain his brilliance in that format. When it comes to T20, I agree with the suggestion of giving him the first couple of games vs Aus but being ready to make tough calls if he doesn't turn it around.
