The Inaugural World Test Championship

So Australia have to beat SA at home to get in the WTC final, can't see that happening.

NZ vs India at Lords it is

However, if Aus draw against India at the Gabba and cancel the SA tour they end up ahead of NZ. Shows how silly it is. It's now heavily weighted against teams that play the most (England and India).

Not just beat them, they need to hold SA to a 2-0 scoreline. Still very possible, SA are a much weaker side than they were in 2018 (no Morkel, no Philander, no ABdV, Ngidi 10k's down in pace, Faf looking past his best etc), and Australia are probably on a similar level. Probably the more worrying thing for Australia is that the series hasn't even been confirmed yet with the coronavirus situation, but given SA found a way to host Sri Lanka I'm guessing it will eventually go ahead.

Given India's home record in the last eight years - 28 wins, one loss in 34 Tests - they should fancy their chances of securing those 80 points.

Wow.... that's crazy good.

Our record isn't bad, since 1st Oct 2012 we have played 37 matches, won 24 and lost 3 at home.

Seeing how India Aus series panned out I wouldn't put past England to put in a decent fight. They will be going from SL and that should help them.

Aussie looks like don't have a very high chance given their batting is a bit brittle and SA bowling quite good in home conditions.

Feels like NZ v India in a neutral venue.... can't wait. Wouldn't have suggested playing in India or NZ. Both places pitches will be heavily favoring the home team and won't make for a fitting final.

England as a neutral venue heavily favours NZ, but the extra bounce and turn you get in English pitches would mitigate that to an extent. NZ would also have an advantage if the mooted NZ v England June series goes ahead. Would be a great game, but I still think it's probably going to be Aus v India. SA still looked a touch fragile against SL this summer, I reckon Aus - with some intelligent changes - are odds on to blank them in the upcoming series.

The WTC is a horrible mess. What's the point in staging a global cricket tournament if only a fraction of the participating nations actually have a chance of winning it?

It’s fun imo, put some life into series for neutrals
It is good for adding an extra dimension to some games which could normally be called dead rubbers, but at the end of the day the fixtures & end result are all geared towards revenue-raising purposes. Meanwhile exactly one quarter of the Test playing nations are frozen out of the tournament completely.

Whatever it takes!!!

Its not perfect even with the way it was conceived and to their credit, ICC admitted that. But I think the covid and 2020 have played a bigger role it ending up a bigger mess than it would have been otherwise.

The whole thing needs to be more tangible IMO. I think a straightforward knockout tournament every four years between the top 8 sides would work perfectly. That way every Test playing nation has a theoretical chance of qualifying & we also get another marquee tournament on the cricketing calendar, plus it means the world rankings still actually mean something.

Host nation can change every four years, whilst drawn Tests would simply mean the higher-ranked team progresses to the next round.

^ This. Which in turn adds even more importance to the world rankings leading up to the tourney.
That just provides an incentive for the top 4 teams to stack their batting. Maybe relative runs - wickets taken in the match could be used.
