As Ponting would say, it comes down to intent. The Mona Lisa and Sistene Chapel weren't created initially because their creators were looking to cash in. They were created because it was the artist's vision. Most pop music is created with money in mind and so places what will sell over making something that is truly great. It becomes formulaic because that formula entices 12 year old girls and adults who have never grown up/are emotionally bereft to buy the music.

Having said that some of the songs on the Trolls Soundtrack are very catchy.

And the editor cut and changed the original cut of Star Wars to make it more commercial but there's no doubting it was art.

All that making something commercial means is that you're making it more popular. It's incredibly elitist to call it "not art". Call it what it truly is, "**** art".
