I reckon it would be so much better in the hands of a better captain who could actually control the frustrations of the team rather than giving into them and was disciplined and consistent about enforcing proper bowling plans. Paine has let this game drift so hard since Pant got out.
While its true the plans have been sub par, none of the execution has been good either. Even Cummins wasnt good at all with the new ball, I was sure he'd clean up at that stage.

See that's the thing - I don't think there really was a plan there, it feels like Paine just figured they would just get them out somehow and that the hard work was basically done, and that flowed through to the whole team. The intensity dropped markedly as soon as Pant got out.

Ponting's weakness as a captain was his conservative attitudes.

Clarke's weakness was his man management skills.

Smith was poor tactically and not strong enough managing Warner.

Paine lets the game drift. Good man manager but it happens a lot with him. He wastes 5 or 6 overs every now and then when the bowlers tactics look innocuous.

He doesn't wanna jinx the batters with the commentators curse. Smart man. Doing his bit to help the team.
Baseball makes for such a good listening than viewing because of the stories behind players and poetic rendition of action happening. Somehow Harsha is doing too much of that these days, I wonder if he was asked in specific to contribute as such..

Hmm, some yolo batting from Sundar since he got his fifty. Settle down, and stop going for these swipes, India still a long way behind despite this amazing partnership.

Yep. It feels like once the sixth wicket falls the automatic plan is to just wang it and try batter them out. While this may work against England it hasn't worked on these tests on these pitches, and the short of a length rubbish simply plays the batsmen in.

Sure, I just dont think you can lay all of it on Paine. Cummins is good enough and experienced enough to know what to do with a new ball.

Personally I think the best on field captain in the Aussie side is the one player who is never allowed to be the captain.
