Isn't a lot of what we consider "Chinese food" in the West -- i.e. westernised Cantonese cuisine -- basically what HK cuisine is, except more British?
We've recently made a conscious decision to go out for Cantonese once a month or so. Takes us back to our formative years before what passes for Chinese in this country became wanker food.

Yeah, mall food courts have kind of ruined it tbh, since now that's what people actually expect, just with more sauce and salt.

That's a concerning pitch map. It seems like India just seem content to bore Australia out.
a bowling attack with 3 debutants and a combined experience of 4 Tests against two of the best batsmen in the world at home on a road. Can't really expect them to do much else.

In NZ at least, we are starting to get more Chinese restaurants that are dedicated to foods of a particular region, Sichuan being the most prominent example

It will generally have its origins in the Guangdong area but adapted for Western taste buds. And Guangdong cuisine is essentially Hong Kong cuisine (Hong Kong wasn't really a thing until the British claimed the port).

But there are some Hong Kong foods that have arisen due to the British influence which aren't really Chinese food made British, but British food made Chinese I think
That sounds great tbh.

There's more of that here too, but still definitely far from the norm. And obviously all this changes completely if you go to Burwood or what have you where Chinese migrants have set up.

never really do i have "chinese" food, in the way most westerners know it at least. all about getting down and dirty with the most authentic chinese streetfood places the city has, and when you're in the know, there are a few. much better than the westernised MSG + salt hubs that gwailous fall for every time. you get some really poppin and obscure flavours and ingredients tbh
