You know, as someone involved in the low and/or social levels of cricket around the Auckland region, I encounter virtually no South Africans and literally entire competitions entirely comprised of Indians, yet every new Aces player is South African. Do these NZ-raised South Africans just emerge fully-formed as first class or premier club cricketers somehow? Does this speak to a class structure in Auckland cricket perhaps? I have played for a team on the North Shore before, but mostly out west and out south.

I'm not sure about the class system in Auckland but selection disparity and recognizing talent has been hit and miss forever. I should know Auckland better than Wellington obviously. Originally from Auckland moved to Wellington years ago. Fair number of south Asian cricketers such as Ajaz Patel, Ish sodhi, Jeet raval, Ronnie hira all left Auckland during my time in Auckland due to lesser opportunities to break in. Add Jimmy Neesham, Anaru Kitchen to the list as well. They were all good enough but Auckland selections baffled me then. Proves it just wasn't south Asians but across board Auckland struggled to recognize good talents.

There's been fair rise in south african cricketers since England changed their qualification to play club cricket. The south african cricketers coming to NZ are generally very good players and know how to fight it out. They are rightly selfish without compromising the team result. I haven't seen a mediocre south african player that's moved to NZ for cricketing reasons.

Few Indian kids from Auckland, Dhadwal brothers, Aniket Parekh and couple more skip my mind are young still but I thought they'll break into aces side quite some time ago but hasn't happened yet. Likely they'll move elsewhere at there are no spots available in Auckland.

I just find it really incongruous because while I know a fair few South Africans and the stereotypes about there being a lot of them in certain pockets of Auckland, as a born and raised Aucklander I have never perceived them as one of the major immigrant communities. It is a bit baffling to me how they have achieved such a stranglehold over elite cricket.

I guess if I have to come up with a hypothesis, it’s that something must seriously stink about the pathways in Auckland cricket if 80% of the cricketers I come across are from demographics almost totally unrepresented at the upper echelons, while something like 50% of our upper echelon cricketers are from a demographic I hardly encounter at all.

Yes there will be pretty obvious reasons why people from certain demographics might be more immediately set up to become ‘serious cricketers’ than others, but surely that just means that more work needs to be done. It would surely help the Aces, club competitions etc if the guys that make up the majority of players were able to contribute.

Not all of them migrated when young. Phillips brothers did and Glenn was always a gun player. He was going to play top level was a given.

Will and Rob's dad Mark is originally from New Zealand from what I know but did fair bit of coaching in south africa.

Delport migrated to NZ for cricketing reason.

Ross ter braak grew up here.

Ferns moved for cricketing reason.

Munro grew up here.

The Indian root Auckland cricketers moved to other centres though. Maybe the Indian guys opted for uni rather than professional cricket? Hard to tell.

All the Indian kids I know are uni graduates. They love their studies. Hard to keep up with cricket and studies at the same time could be the most logical reason I can come up with.

I wouldn’t say this is the case in many other sports. Like, rugby league is mostly played by Maori and PI kids and I can assure you that you don’t go and watch a Prems club game and find it’s full of Indian guys.

Fair enough... I suppose I can only put that down to maybe the Indians follow cricket rather than play? I think they're generally a studious population. Probably put studies ahead of playing cricket otherwise I can't quite reason it.
