I feel that one thing which separates Clarke's captaincy with the likes of Paine is that Clarke always had a very good intuitive sense of when to change tactics. I feel like Paine often just lets things go a bit when they're not working. The game drifts occasionally under his leadership. Whereas Clarke's captaincy was always sharp and proactive.
Yes, Paine does seem too stubborn/funky at times with tactics. Clarke had amongst the best intution about where the game was going.

What would've happened if he didn't do it? OTOH India seem closer to victory than Australia. But equally it's far more likely that one of those balls that went up in the air goes to a fielder if India were trying to win the game.

yeah if they actually went for the win, then imo this test is done roughly an hour ago. it's a lot easier to survive on this pitch than survive *and* score quickly, especially if they decide to bounce you.
