let’s remember some guys

Howsie

International Captain

Ewen Thompson

Your classic New Zealand 80’s/90’s cricketer playing in the late 00’s. Thompson wasn’t much of a batsman nor bowler but this didn’t stop him from playing a single 20/20 and ODI against the touring West Indies in 2009. A left arm swing bowler lucky to hit 125kph Chris Gayle took a liking to his bowling and the rest was history

ET got Gayle early in a T20, did he not? They set a trap at square leg and Gayle fell straight into it. And yeah, he was 125km in his dreams...120 max.

I think the definition meant that 'a guy' had to have flashes of brilliance, of form etc rather than being the international flash in the pans that messers Priest, Stewart and Thompson and co were.

I worship the ground he walks on, but you could argue Kyle Mills was a guy at Test level. 44 Test wickets, with smatterings here and there apart from the 4-16 he ripped out of England (messers Pietersen, Vaughan, Cook and Strauss - the first four) to win the first Test in the Tron in 2008. The nadir of his career definitely being when John Bracewell thought it would be a good idea to bat him at #3 in SA chasing 249 (and he wasn't a night watch man).

kyle mills is one of nzs best 10 odi bowlers ever. while he's relatively underappreciated even in nz because he's just another tall kiwi medium fast bowler he was also far too successful, long serving and too well known as a 00s kiwi cricketer to count for this thread imo regardless of sporadic test appearances.

With the Test on at the moment at the SCG, the original de Villiers deserves a mention:

Fanie a fair shout, perhaps a touch too notable for Sydney 94, but a decent call nethertheless.

Staying with South African quicks of that era I have often thought people forget about Craig Matthews more than they should.

Well played young man. King Mills has no place in a 'guys' thread, I only stood to point out as you did that his outstanding ODI record makes his less memorable Test one non-admissable.

I don't think De Villiers or Matthews count as guys. They're in that group of South African players cricket careers started before readmission, so weren't able to have a full international career, but still managed to get in a decent amount of international cricket (both played more than 50 ODIs).
