Dunno if it's the same for WI, but NZ would always have a much longer rope with an opener or #3 i.e. Brathwaite, Campbell, Bravo, than a number 5 like Chase who has the advantage of not facing the new ball. There's always a shortage of openers and a plethora of middle order batsmen. It may not be quite the same in WI as home games don't offer quite as much to the new ball, but you still have to tour Aus, NZ, SA & England where it's very tough to open.

Chase's output from the privileged position of 5 has been terrible, so time for someone else.

Where does he fit in is the question? I'd be surprised if Dowrich doesn't come back and given before the England series he was in better form then most of the other batsman I have no issue with him returning. Da Silva could open but after looking good today I fear it leads to a possible talent struggling and being binned off in the medium term.

I am a fan of Chase but starting to agree that its close to the end of the road in the short term at least, he has had some good innings but nothing really of note for quite a while - Would I drop him for the next Test? - I'm not sure - West Indies next series is in Bangladesh and I wonder how you balance the bowling (and batting) without Chase. I'd presume the West Indies would ideally want 3 seamers (including J Holder), Cornwall and Chase in an ideal world. It would allow them to field the following XI (the XI I think they'll want to go with) - Brathwaite, Campbell, Bravo, Brooks, Chase, Blackwood, Dowrich (wk), Holder, Cornwall, Roach, Gabriel.

Remove Chase and you can easily fit da Silva, Pooran or Hetmyer in and probably improve the batting on current form but Kraigg Brathwaite suddenly becomes your 2nd spinner unless you remove one of Roach or Gabriel for a spinner - presumably Jomel Warrican or a more outside bet in Devendra Bishoo. Given neither of them can bat whilst you could go da Silva/Pooran for Dowrich (a move I don't think will or necessarily should happen) and Warrican/Bishoo for Chase that leaves you with Cornwall, Roach, Warrican, Gabriel as a long looking tail given Cornwall hasn't yet got a Test innings of note under his belt.

Fun weekend at the Basin, and good to see a bit more fight from WI today. Thought NZ's bowling tactics were a bit off - Southee and Boult going hunting for bouncer wickets was odd given that when they pitched it up the ball tended to go past the edge of the bat at least once per over. Jamieson's first over yesterday was one of the best I've ever seen, and the fact that he was still looking pretty threatening today even when the ball wasn't swinging as much was good. Looking forward to the Pakistan series.

thought the guys looked a bit tired this arvo. they've had a lot of bowling in this series due to enforcing the follow on twice and no spinner to soak up overs, which is a reason why i don't like enforcing it often. we should have had a slog for 100-150 runs and let the quartet put their feet up.

any word on wagner? looked like he had a sore hip. if he and ferguson are unavailable for boxing day then things get interesting.

Yeah I didn’t like the idea either, and this is why you need a spinner as well.

Possibly a sign that Wagner is getting on in years. One of the best things about him from the beginning of his career was he was the one NZ bowler who wouldn’t get injured, I can’t remember him missing a single game on fitness grounds. If he’s not available for boxing day, I’d hope CdG and Patel are both fit.

Good point, and that's why I'm surprised Mitchell didn't bowl more overs.

Since about 2009 maybe, post John Bracewell? TMac was given 17 consecutive tests. Before that it was a revolving door which obviously didn’t help, but with the exception of Cumming most of them were either not up to it or were converted middle order players. Hard times.
