Gillette cup starting today. It's the national school boys comp. Best of the schools from all regions participate in this tournament.

Wellington College has some really good players. P Bonar, W Stevenson, O Jackson and K Weerasundara (Raki Weerasundara's brother or cousin) are players to keep a watch. All these players products of the Hutt Hawks run by Ravindra's dad (scanned the scorecards from their facebook :p ). Hutt Hawks are a near parallel cricket organization it sounds like. So many players toured with them. Neesham, Raval, Ravindra, Blundell, N Smith and whole firebirds team go on winter trips or have been on winter trips. Willow from Chirstchurch used to as well. Not sure if Willow is still active.

I expect Henry Walsh, Nick Greenwood both from Taita to make firebirds squad this season. Henry Walsh is a former firebirds player and not as green as Greenwood no pun intended... Time for Firebirds to also look at C McLauchlan as a back up keeper. L Johns has been the backup for Blundell and since 4 years he has not done anything of note. C McLauchlan was in the U19 NZ side couple of years ago and should be given some chances.

I guess they blew 3 years worth of U19s budget on the preceding 2 year cycle someone's son was in it?
Yeah what happened to the Ollie White kid? I thought he was all right, didn't score many but he looked all right.

Now is normally when the national U19 tournament is on. I still haven't found any news on its cancellation, doing a google search.
Well if they continue to go all out with video scorecards and stump mics when there's no son of the CEO involved, it'll be a pleasant surprise.

Not that the U19 obscure gems often really kick on through the 18yo-22yo club period very well, these days. Only really the South African-borns (and now Adi Ashok) drive their big bulldozer through all the clubby debris to get to where they want.

Finally our younger bunch from Firebirds are showing up in the contest. Bhula the other day, Troy Johnson yesterday and Finn Allen is back as well. Allen looked quite good and played sensibly. He didn't make a huge score but he will do over the course of time. We're missing a lot of players and this was time for some of the younger lot to grab the opportunity. Have to say they have gone all right.

Ken McClure continues to plunder runs. Are we going to see him in Black Caps one day squad this year? I don't see any reason why he can't be tried vs Bangers. I hope we are consistent with selections and not keep going back to over 30 year old players for one day series. Time to build some young players keeping in mind the world cup in India in couple of years time.

Didn't realise there was a Ford Trophy round yesterday. Another tomorrow too. One thing that's good to see is that after a very difficult start to the FC season for just about everyone under the age of 23, several are prospering now - Bhula, Clarke, Smith, Rachin, even the maligned Finn Allen managed to pump one over the fence.

Highlight of the round CD's three run-outs though - confusion in the ranks, "I didn't even know I was supposed to talk to my partner".

Kelly / Finnie run out in the Otago game was hard to beat, both batters doing a ball-watching side-shuffle in the middle of the pitch.

Sounds like a good game against Otago BHS featuring Craig Cumming's sons. Finn Hurley who hit a century off 65 balls against Wellington College has apparently been highly rated for a while and is a handy rugby player (his dad played fullback for Southland). Ex-Southland All Black Simon Culhane's son sounds quite promising too.

Ravindra is the 9th Wellington player to achieve 5 fer and a hundred in a game. JR Reid another Hutt Valley man achieved this for Wellington twice. He was a serious talent and died recently. It's an awesome achievement for Hutt Valley to have two achieve this feat.

Bruce Taylor primarily a bowler that could bat. Have heard a lot of him and have met him too. Mystery Morrison more of a batsman but did roll his arm. Left arm spinner from memory. He's quite a legend in Wellington cricket circle too.
