I wouldn't be that surprised if Cornwall came in for Chase. Obviously the better bowler and Chase hasn't offered anything with the bat in Tests for ages (he averages under 25 in his last 20 tests). It's not exactly likely, but I think it's possible.

I was about to chip in and say that Chase did well with the bat on the England tour earlier this year, but a quick check of the stats shows he didn't do as well as I thought. (My memory is of him getting lots of starts but not kicking on. I guess in a low scoring series the starts felt more consequential at the time than they truly were.) Cornwall's efforts with the bat in the one Test he played here were pretty sad though, given his #canbat reputation.

Mitchell will obviously retain his place for Wellington but if CdG is not fit in time for the Pakistan series would definitely prefer some added batting depth. Even though NZ’s recent record against Pakistan is very strong they generally make it a habit of bowling out NZ for low scores.

Yes if Tauranga has its bluebird weather the week before Christmas, there's no way you should be running with five seamers there.

I suspect it could well be Jamieson rather than Mitchell/CdG that gets replaced by a spin option though.

I agree with you but Chase is one of those with a seemingly free pass to carry on not performing with no threat of replacement.

They've even rewarded his terrible performances with the vice captaincy. Unbelievable.

Delighted for Joshua Da Silva, I'm looking forward to seeing him play. I agree with SCC's team, can't see any other alternative unless they play Paul instead of Holder.

Joshua's latest video. Not his most interesting but he must have been pretty busy. I think he comes across as very humble, especially if you watch some of his earlier stuff, coaching videos etc.

Hopefully he'll become the best Portuguese cricketer ever ahead of Moises Henriques.

NZ's 4th bowler (or lower), at home last 5 years:

Just for the Mitchell v Santner v extra batter debate. Or batsman who can bowl some spin.

Santner averages basically per innings: 15 over for 35 runs, and 0.9 wickets (2.29 per over).

Santner's batting (especially to the short ball) is of more concern to me, tbh, than his bowling.
I think he's of more value than Mitchell, although hasn't played any red-ball since March.

Well Bay Oval in warm weather can start to blunt everyone's pacers so hard that having a spinner with a stronger record of longer-format hauls could be more of key to victory hopes than appreciated. It is one of our grounds where India A were seen scoring 700+ for 11 wickets as recently as 2018/19. They're obviously our boss/dad and our groundsmen may walk on eggshells more around BCCI teams than PCB ones, but it's a scorecard we've got to be mindful of.

Somerville suddenly a real asset to your XI in Tauranga if he could get this kind of assistance out of Boult/Wagner/Shaheen Afridi's rough to RHBs, for example.

I definitely think Phillips and Rachin would better options @ six for this current NZ team at home than Daryl Mitchell.
Yeah you could make a case either one of those three ways. You'd hope the piddly amount of overs Mitchell can offer wouldn't form any part of the argument mind you.

If Mitchell's bowling isn't factoring in then you'd think they'd pick Conway or Young instead.

True enough. I just can't see many scenarios where Mitchell's overs are going to be of any benefit to you, so as you say then you're either picking the next best batsman or you're picking a batsman-spinner like Rachin or if we're saying Phillips

i don't mind mitchell as a straight swap for cdg at all, i think he's a decent player. with kane so reluctant to bowl though i am concerned about getting jumped on day 5 late summer. im open to the phillips meme, but we probably want more of a specialist on a high summer deck. our guy is ajaz imo, and it probably means southee has a rest unless he decides he's going to be sensible at #8.

santner shouldn't be near the test side. he's always going to offer less than the opposition spinner and anyone with a bowler capable of some zip (so obviously excluding the medium pace england sent down last summer) will bounce him out.

Agree with this, and I think that's why he's playing. But it kind of ignores the fact that CdG's position with regards to the balance of the team was kind of in a weird place to begin with once the selectors decided to pick four other quicks.

King Conway just didn't appreciate one of the first things he could've done in his early NZ club games was to get back into some of the bowling that used to feature on junior scorecards. He could've then got these Daryl Mitchell caps.
