*Official* West Indies in New Zealand - Nov/Dec 2020

Well that sucks, normally wouldn’t give a damn about an international T20 being rained off but would have loved to see more of NZ’s newer squad additions. A refreshing change from the standard issue lineups. Hope most of them stay in squad for Pakistan when Williamson and Boult are likely to return.

i found it refreshing. bishop is class but baz and macka are so much better chatting about the game than commentating on it. commentary really is a specialist skill.

The T20 side traveled all that way, came out of quarantine on the day of the match and then put in two diabolical fielding and bowling performances before the 3rd was washed out. Excellent series for the blackcaps, but the only thing we got out of it is that the fielders need a rocket up their backsides when conditions aren't ideal and that our bowling combinations are nowhere near settled.

Onto the tests now and hopefully at least a more committed performance.

Exciting stuff with Young coming into the playing XI now. Blundell likely to play at no.6

Conway won't be in the playing XI but Young will be in all likelihood. Finally Young gets a go at test cricket, it's taken some time for him to get a go. BJ missing out is not great but Young in the starting XI is great news.

Coach Gary Stead with an injury update ahead of the Test squad’s first full training at Seddon Park. Devon Conway has traveled to Hamilton to join the squad as batting cover with BJ Watling monitoring a hamstring injury picked up in the opening round of the Ford Trophy.

Depends on if Watling recovers doesn’t it? Conway should be in the side anyway, regardless of injuries.

Hopefully doesn't impact on Conway playing for NZ 'A'. But Hamilton and Mt Maunganui is very manageable. Not like he needs to get down to Queenstown.

Conway is out of the NZ A side and is in the test side now but warming the bench. Probably 12th or 13th man. He will also get a go shortly, now is the time for Young. He's been slugging it out in domestic cricket for nearly 6-8 years. He's in awesome form and looks a very matured player. Best time to get him in. Good to see competition and the incumbents that are deserving.

Don't think so BJ is definitely out. If Young goes really well (likely to open) then it would be interesting what happens to Blundell and BJ going forward.

In defence of Will Young, has there ever been a home grown NZ domestic batsman with a more complete CV than his (Maybe Sinclair - though I can't remember what his numbers looked like before his debut in 2000)? 5000+ FC runs, average of 44, extended success at A level, has scored hundred against quality international bowlers (albeit in practice matches). Yes, I know Kippax has concerns about how large his pads look against accurate seam and inswing bowling, but overall I think it's really hard to say he doesn't deserve a go. In all likelihood, Taylor and Watling will retire this year, so a couple of spots will open up for the 2 of them in the near term anyway.

Kippax may know about his slightly less preference to in dippers but not West Indies. He's already faced all their top bowlers. I do think the WI bowlers in the first warm up bowled their best where Young got some runs knowing that's the only hit they are going to get before the test match. I don't know what the fuss is about, Young is a quality batter. Maybe didn't convert 50s to 100s ages ago but apart from Conway he's our next best batter available.

No CDG for sure, he's out of this test series. It'll either be Darryl Mitchell or Santner. I'd rather prefer Santner. Mitchell just doesn't inspire me. Maybe because I know he's quite a loud mouth for the kind of player he is. Santner may find a way finally to grab couple of wickets or probably just bowl in the right areas for long periods of time. This is the only real gap we have in the team, lacking a good quality test spinner.
