Phillips is like this unholy amalgam of Smith and Warner. Warner's nugget build, a combination of Smith's pig face and Warner's dog face, Warner's celebrations and showboating, Warner's hyperactive fielding, Smith's general on-the-spectrum personality, and most importantly, basically Smith's whole batting technique.

I feel like I am going to be happily saying unintentionally mean-sounding thinks about this dork for years to come.
haha it's true. if steve smith could grow a beard he'd be glenn phillips.

i like warner and smith so phillips being the kiwi equivalent makes my day. it's ****in funny. im imagining a test side with phillips, wagner, jamieson, sears and mcewan in it and it makes me happy.

Hahaha. Couldn't meet a nicer guy than Glenn. He is nowhere near those sort of autistic personalities. He's ants in the pants, but he's a beauty.

Yeah he truly is an entertainer. Excitable character who seems like a genuinely good, clean hearted dude. So much fun to watch him bat and field these last few days. He's still got that childish playfulness to him. He's borderline adorable LOL and I wish the best for him.

Gotta give credit to the NZ staff and team culture that has been developed over the last 7 years. Its because of that culture that a young kid can come in and express himself comfortably like Phillips does.

Hopefully from now on, commentators target southee's poor performances and show some of that passive-aggressive jibber jabber to him instead of a youngin trying to build confidence like sief. God forbid they've been duckin southee crisitism for years despite failure after failure.

I'm contradicting but yeah love those NZ A games. Something for domestic cricketers to also thrive to get to. Good pathway to get to the national side no doubt. Honestly I don't mind West Indies, Pakistan and Bangladesh showing some good spirit and fight. Obviously want Black Caps to win but not like they did against England and India last year. I would rather see these guys acclimatize and play good cricket. We need good close games in all formats so that there is something for us to look forward to this year. It's been a shocking year to say the least. I was quietly egging on Pollard last night although it came at some of our bowlers expense. Yes we lost 5 T20s last year and it was frustrating but to say they were close games is stating the obvious. We need more of those edge of the seat thrillers.

Resting Ravindra, Sears and some more from the current team for the next game I see. Good to see they are trying different players. Still a very good team to play WI A. Same with the squad for Pak A. Really good side for Pakistan to play against.

Missing from the teams but likely should be included

Will Somerville
Rutherford
Raval
Finn Allen? - I know he's not gone as well so far but I still think he's one for the future and should be persisted.

finn allen should be nowhere near the A side. if anything i think will williams deserves a run to see if the meme continues at a higher level but nzc are a very self conscious organisation.

i think i sort of get the mcconchie meme now. before this season (which cricarchive hasn't updated for yesterday anyway) his batting record reads.

10 matches, 548 @ 45.66 with 2 tons and a 50.

his first 6 fc games were spread across several years before he got a proper run in 2016/17 and averaged 49 before struggling the next season then to the 10 game streak posted above.

im gonna watch some footage to see if i see what the selectors see because they're clearly fans. he's been beating some decent players to that NZ A berth.

I'm surprised at the lack of Daryl Mitchell in any of the NZA games this season, particularly given how many players have been given a run. His season has been okay - he scored a ton in what seemed like pretty tricky conditions (opposition rolled for 115 and then he came in at 75/3) and has been in the bowling form of his life (admittedly in conditions that have really suited him). He looked good in his only Test last season too.

I'm guessing they only really saw him as a backup to Lord Colin, and now perhaps think the better play in the event of his injury/decline would be to play the four specialist quicks and McConchie.

EDIT: Actually he's in the Test squad/bubble because Colin is injured. Makes more sense.

There's zero chance that any commentator is going after Southee. It's never happened and it never will.

Didn’t Doull do it last season or season before and got a telling off by NZC?
There was that rumour floating around, yeah. It's a different setup here to the NBA, NFL etc. The host broadcaster is expected to work hand in hand with the national sporting body. They're required to be cheerleaders - no tough analysis required, and that goes for cricket, rugby etc. It's very similar in Australia. So yeah, if your job is put in doubt by getting too tough, no one's going to do it. Which is rubbish really, because where do we get strong cricket analysis? Nowhere apart from here.

They're supposed to be cheerleaders? They've brutally shred a hell of a lot of players over the years. I understand what you're saying in that they're never going to be particularly tough on stalwart members of the squad or their personal favourites, but they moan more than we do.

Haha yeah - see Simon Doull's enduring questioning of Neil Wagner's place in the team until waaaaay after it became obvious that he was streets ahead of the next best options at first change.

I reckon Sears should've been given this Bay Oval NZA one rather than the Queenstown one tbh. Larsen should've had a quick look at last month's Shield game played on the quicker half of Bay Oval's block.

It could be argued Sears has had his attention diverted by study to the point he's entered the season without his best stuff, but Larsen could've probably also tried more to meet him halfway, finally got him onto a nice quick pitch that suits his bowling method.
