*Official* West Indies Tour of England 2020

No, the stupid part was Root giving him an unbroken 11 over spell in the Windies first innings after he had batted the small matter of almost 400 balls. Stokes is like Baahubali and Root is like Queen Sivakami.
It is a Root trait. Jofra has already bowled some backbreaking spells. Just no idea how to manage aggressive bowlers.

Holder said that West Indies had yet to make a decision on their XI, preferring to wait until seeing the pitch in the morning, but confirmed that they would only be selecting from the players in the official 15-man squad, rather than looking at options such as Joshua Da Silva or Oshane Thomas from the reserve party.
Groan! Sounds very much like Campbell and Hope will play this test match as well. He gave Cornwall big raps saying he's the best spinner on either side, so why not play him?!

Good to see Ed Smith earning his keep. Big decision as to which 3 specialist seamers to select? Just dump all 6 candidates into the match day squad and leave it to the captain to sort out.

i think it's a pretty easy selection for england, and only two questions for the windies.

burns
sibley
crawley
root
stokes
pope
buttler/foakes
bess
archer
broad
anderson

the 3 best quicks, bess has been good, the batting is obvious (can't punt crawley after pushing him to #3), just a question over whether buttler should get one final chance.

brathwaite
campbell...or another opener
hope..or another top order bat
brooks
blackwood
chase
dowrich
holder
cornwall
gabriel or joseph (fitness dependent)
roach

bravo will need slotting into the side after the series in place of hope and hetmyer/da silva could push for a spot but brooks and blackwood have been good

Archer shouldn't be allowed to play today. Should have been banned for 1 Test for willingly breaking protocols (last test was missed for medical reason as he could have had covid)

I may be biased as I want WI to win :)

Jofra is becoming a bit of a problem child
nah, this is the only incident of his isn't it? stokes has brought the team into far more strife.

i'm a jofra skeptic because when he's down he's so open about it on the field, but he's been well behaved before now and i think we should judge him based on his performances.

This is the first thing he's ever done and, in the scheme of the behaviour of athletes, it's really not that bad. More daft than malicious. He's just under far more scrutiny than other young cricketers both because of what he's done in his career already, and some other factors that are out of his control like his background, the colour of his skin, the media etc.

I love how open he is about his feelings too, it's refreshing. Michael Vaughan and his old guard of 'oooh just tough it out ooooh' can get ****ed. Really thought we'd moved on from that mindset after so many high profile cricketers suffering with mental illness.

there is no avoiding the fact that the 'he is too laid back, doesn't take it seriously enough, look at him pissing about on a segway' nonsense is nothing but deep rooted racism.

What the?

I guess the "he is too laid back, doesn't take it seriously enough" when applied to Mark Waugh and David Gower was also racism then....

it's 'the black man is lazy' rhetoric

gower and waugh are lauded for their approach to the game, its a weird take
It's a weird one. Richards was celebrated for it too. There's the story of Cowdrey junior being excited at the toss but cool guy Viv showed up in flip flops. I think the Archer hate is at least partly a contrarian response to him being hyped up by the English media a la Anderson.

If it's really overcast, wonder if either team would risk bowling first after what happened last time. Not sure there will be time to bat big and slow like we did, may have to bank on skittling the opposition in the best conditions.
