[Not so] Huge statistical analysis on greatest ODI batsman and bowlers ranked

I was going to have a cutoff of 100 wickets which would have made Rackemann miss out. Changed it to 80 to get roughly same number of bowlers in shortlist as the batsmen.

These are the Indians in the top 50 batsmen (only two bowlers made it - Harbhajan and Kumble).

SR Tendulkar
V Kohli
MS Dhoni
RG Sharma
V Sehwag
M Azharuddin
SC Ganguly
Yuvraj Singh

Rearranging, here's the best top 7 IMO:

SR Tendulkar
RG Sharma
V Kohli
M Azharuddin
MS Dhoni
Yuvraj Singh
V Sehwag

Sehwag can come out blasting at the end. Yuvraj needed for his overs. Azharuddin lucky to be even included in this list. But it's a pretty damn strong top 7.

Kudos to Ankit for the great work.

I have been a long term believer that Virender Sehwag is criminally under-rated in ODIs. No. 15 is about the right place for him. He very much belongs in an ATG Indian ODI XI. Incosistent but explosive players do have a place in ODIs. When they fire, they win the matches. When they don't, they still leave others around them with plenty of overs to win.

Kapil Dev at #20 is about the right place for him in ODI bowlers. It is touch and go between Kapil and Imran for me in an ATG ODI XI. Depends on who are playing in top six.

Hadlee and Ambrose are two other unfairly under-rated ODI bowlers. Should start appearing in more ATG ODI teams going forward.

Without adjusting for longevity, Bumrah is at #8 which is superb. ER of 4.56 against benchmark of 5.38 helps him big.

Thing with guys like Bumrah and Barstow is that they've played lots of games against third choice lineups.

We have seen Bumrah bowl though, we know he is pretty good and because ankitj has normalized by career all of Bumrah's contemporaries share the same advantage.

Yeah but it's a small sample size so things like that cause bigger discrepancies. Against Australia, NZ, England and Pakistan his ER is higher. Still good though. Still a small sample size, mind. Had a very good WC even though he didn't stand out as much, I'll give you that.

Whatever it takes!!!
I like the fact that the numbers seem to support my hypothesis on Hussey being a moderate upgrade on Bevan overall. :)

only one spot higher off a simpler analysis, right? I think I can find enough numbers to support my hypothesis.. I am just glad it shows them that close to each other, coz I really felt it may show them farther apart.

I think log doesn't count in. 1 -> 0, 10 -> 1, 100 -> 2. 400 -> 2.6

Probably log on base 5 would do better. 1 -> 0, 5 -> 1, 25 -> 2, 125 -> 3, 625 -> 4. 400 will be 3.72

That will just scale all scores by a constant. It will not change the rankings.

Also I'm using log of span in years, not number of matches.

Good point here when comparing the eras. Much more player resting and sub-full-strength sides in ODIs since 2000. Before then your first-choice team was mostly playing every ODI that was available.

Also feel like the big teams have played much more games against minnows since 2000 (some more so than others).

Look at the most wicket charts for the 2010s vs the 2000s.

https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/e...ickets_career.html?class=2;id=201;type=decade

https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/e...ickets_career.html?class=2;id=200;type=decade

The number of matches for the top bowlers in the 10s compared to the 00s is insane. Most of the top quicks in the 10s played under 100 ODIs, while the top quicks of the 00s played closer to 150, sometimes more.

The runs aggregates reveal what happened:

https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/e...t_runs_career.html?class=2;id=200;type=decade

https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/e...t_runs_career.html?class=2;id=200;type=decade

Each player in the 2010s appears to have played around 50 ODIs less than they would have in the 00s.

That means players are playing less ODIs but fast bowlers are still sitting out of the same number of ODIs. Which means a hugger percentage of ODIs have had second string attacks.

That's why the standardization. Of course it's the be all end all of ranking players. But I'm not sure if that particular issue affects the results.
