Neither Malan nor Verreynne have had great domestic season. Klaasen has not exactly had his best season either, but been relatively consistent. From a longer term consistency point of view can understand the selection of Klaasen and Verreynne, but I don't know what J. Malan has done more than say Roelfeson or Rickelton to get the nod.

I am happy for these guys to be given a shot, at least it feels like forward progression. But overall not happy with current CSA selection. Feels to much like the same old same old.

Yeah. I don't think we can expect the finished articles at 21,22,23 but around 24/25 I would expect more consistency in performance. I did all those guys as along with Mulder , Bird and Parsons are where our under 24 age group and key to where our future lies. What we need to judge now is, not just runs like above because you can get varying pitches. It is super flat in PMB, Durban, Bloem, Kimberley for 4-day cricket and can be for Paarl/Newlands/PE/EL too if attacks lack quality to expose batsman but they could easily also be extremely tough to bat on to. Take the first game at Potch this season - stats were effected by a raging turner first up. So that is where academy coaches, SA A , the franchise coaches need to build dossiers on these young players and report back to Corrie van Zyl/Graeme Smith/Mark Boucher and it will be an on-going process.

Don't forget when they announced this : https://cricket.co.za/news/26925/CS...y-Programme-intake-for-first-three-year-cycle

In addition Galiem, M.Jansen & Ntini played in the winter - you would imagine Bird, Parsons and Coetzee as the new youngsters to the pro ranks will join soon plus others that were ignored like some of the batsmen above. No Roelofsen, Ackerman, Rickelton for example (but they may just skip to SA A). Possible bowlers to add like Tait , Mnyaka, Cele.

Regarding the earlier Markram discussion, the problem right now is that we have noone to bowl anything from our top 6. Which essentially means we have no leeway with our number 7 - they have to bowl 10.

We don't have anyone who really is bankable to do this - Lucky, Pretorius etc can all get carted, but will have to bowl out anyway.

Long-term the answer is Mulder at 5/6 but for now it's tough. Markram is the best we have and even if he doesn't bowl every game, he needs to be capable of getting through three or four to cover up our weakness at 7.

This issue is the reason Smuts has been given this opportunity, too - he's presumably not seen as a genuine fifth bowler; more a guy who can take a bit of pressure off the fifth bowler/7 batsman role, where we are weak. Unfortunately he's not deserving of a top 6 spot - but we don't have a decent part-timer in that list.

This is why I think Duminy was criminally underrated in the shorter formats - he was actually a fantastic ODI batsman and a very solid 6th bowler. We're really not used to this situation we find ourselves in as before Duminy there was Kallis, who made the whole discussion a non-factor.

Definitely. It is one of our issues we got to sort over the next 4 years. It also isn't very easy as you don't want to weaken the top 6 because of it.

So hopefully it can happen naturally.

Always been a fan of Subrayen.

SUBRAYEN TAKES OVER DOLPHINS MODC CAPTAINCY
Durban – Without talismanic skipper Keshav Maharaj, Hollywoodbets Dolphins off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen will take over the leadership duties for the Momentum One Day Cup top of the table clash with the Imperial Lions at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium on Thursday.

Maharaj is in the current Proteas squad for the One Day International Series with Australia and then will also be part of the touring squad to India later this month which rules him out until the final, should the Dolphins qualify.

The Dolphins are four points clear of the Lions on the log and this game is the first of two that the sides will play against each other over the next eight days. The results from those two games should determine who will finish top of the log going into the semi-finals.

Assistant coach of the Dolphins Quinton Friend believes the side won’t miss a beat despite the loss of their skipper for the rest of the competition.

“Prenelan has been very good for the Dolphins in white ball cricket for a long, long time and he is very experienced,” Friend said. “He has been bowling well this season and we feel he has the attributes to lead the side well and the team has brought into his appointment.

“He is well respected in the group and we think he will do the job really well.”

The Lions have got a game in hand over the Dolphins and have the same record in the competition as the Dolphins with only one loss on their card so far. This game will be vital in setting up the log for the final few rounds.

“We are going to have to be on point in this one and make sure that we have all of our bases well covered.

“Preparation has been good and we know what is coming our way. We are really looking forward to the clash and obviously it is going to be a big one in the context of the competition.

“The priority for us is to take it game by game but we obviously are looking to finish in that top spot on the log.”

The players got a well-deserved break considering they had a week’s break between fixtures and Friend is happy with that little bit of respite.

“We gave the guys Friday and Saturday off last week to have a bit of a rest,” he added. “Then some guys played club cricket on Sunday because we wanted them to get some game time while others rested.

“The guys have come into the game refreshed for the big on against the Lions on Thursday evening.”

Cody Chetty could get his first run in the competition with Maharaj out of the side while seamer Keith Dudgeon returns to the squad for Thursday’s all-important clash.

Been thinking about Bryce Parsons. He should maybe move to the Titans.

Lions just have too many "white" players performing.
Rickelton (GAU), Richards (GAU) , van der Dussen (NW), Mulder (GAU), van den Bergh (NW), Lubbe (NW), Potgieter (GAU) , D.Pretorius (NW), Hawken (NW), M.Pretorius (NW)

For the Titans you can divide them.
High class : Elgar, Markram, de Bruyn, du Plessis, de Kock, Klaasen (Steyn, Morris, Viljoen will rarely play, if ever)
The next batch ie
NOR : Brand, de Swardt, Hermann, Simmonds, C.Bosch
EAS : Marshall, Thomson, Arnold, Cartwright
isn't anywhere near their usual high level. Only youngster from own system who has a chance is Ruan de Swardt. Well, to meet their high standards at least.Corbin flatters to deceive.

Going across Rickelton looks a weakness from what I have seen of Rickelton but like Malan does - it is how you adapt and keep sticking at it despite your weakness/faults.

Dupavillon to Rickelton, FOUR runs, EDGED and through the gap at second slip

My company has been doing quite a few cricket pitch covers for the over 50s world cup starting next week in Cape Town.

Such a pity the main attraction in Jonty Rhodes pulled out. Still Dave Callaghan and the likes.

Faf back for the Titans.

FAF BACK AS TITANS LOOK FOR A RETURN TO WINNING WAYS AGAINST WARRIORS
The Momentum Multiply Titans welcome back former South African captain Faf du Plessis for their Momentum One-day Cup clash with the Warriors on Friday, as he looks to keep in form ahead of the tour of India.

Rested for the third one-day international against Australia, Du Plessis will bring a weight of experience and class.

Around him, he will also have another Protea making his way back into the national frame in Aiden Markram. He has got back from an extended injury layoff, and started showing signs of his quality.

‘Naturally it’s been really nice to make a bit of an impact, but two losses aren’t ideal and they hurt,” Markram said of the Titans fortunes.

“It’s honestly very nice to be back on the field. It’s been pretty much four tough months with back to back injuries, so being back on the field is the best part of it all.”

A hand injury in India was followed up by a finger injury in the Boxing Day Test against England, so he has spent plenty of time watching instead of playing.

Now, with a century since his return, Markram is looking forward to meeting the tenacious Warriors.

“It’s always been a really good game between us and the Warriors. I think back three or four years, we’ve played them in numerous finals and they are a team that play well in the Highveld,” he warned. “But we also enjoy playing in our home conditions in Benoni and Centurion. It’s going to be a good game and with the team in the position we’re in we’re looking forward to it because we are trying to get things right and get back on a winning note.”

His century in Kimberley against the Knights was a massive boost personally, and Markram now wants to kick on.
“It was nice to do well in Kimberly, but the team didn’t get the result. So my performance didn’t count for much,” the team man lamented.

“I would’ve loved for it to be a bigger hundred and one that could put the team in a position where we couldn’t lose. I was slightly disappointed with getting out, because my role is to go a lot deeper.”

Against the visiting Warriors, he will have the opportunity to do just that, as the Titans look to stop a run of defeats.

“I think the defeats got a bit of fire in the belly in the team and the guys are that extra bit excited and motivated to do well and get back on winning terms.”

MOMENTUM MULTIPLY TITANS (FROM): Grant Thomson (Capt), Farhaan Behardien, Corbin Bosch, Junior Dala, Theunis de Bruyn, Tony de Zorzi, Francois du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Imraan Manack, Aiden Markram, Rivaldo Moonsamy, Alfred Mothoa, Diego Rosier.

Not good.

Meanwhile, the young seamer Gerald Coetzee’s injured toe is not healing as well as it should be, and the Knights will in all likelihood opt to rest him for the remainder of the competition.

Good win for the Dolphins yesterday. Good mix that has been suited to limited overs cricket for a while.

Titans have Markram, de Zorzi, Faf and Elgar as a top 4 today. Does that mean Theunis misses out on selection ?

No Qeshile ? Breetzke keeping.

When last did Faf score runs ?

Good to see from Tony. Getting some consistency now. They've rated him but he never had the output that matched it from SA u19 till now.

Ngoepe looks to be doing what Rapulana did last year e.g. putting together consistent performances despite having a terrible average and not much previous. Rapulana didn't push on this season, back playing amateur cricket, and that's the challenge for Lesiba moving into next season.

Been a tough season for Marco Marais. Obvioulsy a tough gig but I would say Lubbe/Potgieter are ahead of him now for middle order basher and can offer a bit with the ball too.
